HIRAM, Ohio – January 28, 2022 – Hiram men's basketball defeated Wooster, 83-81, inside Price Gymnasium Friday night. With time expiring at the end of regulation,
Kevin Beans Jr. hit a buzzer-beating jump shot giving the Terriers the victory over the Fighting Scots.
After two free throws from Brandon Styers, Wooster started the contest off with an 11-2 lead just over three minutes in. Hiram reached double figures about three minutes later with
Brodgie Gordon making a jumper. The senior followed that with a three with Hiram still trailing 19-10.
With 11:03 remaining in the first half,
Ivan Yang followed the back-to-back scoring from Gordon with multiple buckets himself. The freshman hit a three followed by two free throws. After the made shots, Hiram now trailed just 26-23.
Down the stretch run of the first half, a back-and-forth affair ensued. Hiram took their first lead of the game after
Doug Sartain hit a three-point shot putting the home team up 35-33 with 5:43 left in the first half.
Spencer Willman capped off the scoring for the first half for Hiram, draining two free throws. Carter Warstler tied the game at 41 with five seconds left in the half, as each team went into the locker room with 41 points.
The second half started similarly to the way the first half ended with back-and-forth scoring.
Michael Ewart scored the first four points of the second half as Hiram held the small 45-43 lead about 90 seconds into the half.
Jamir Billings scored five-straight points for Wooster, as the Fighting Scots looked to possibly breakaway up 64-59. After Wooster took a 70-61 lead, Hiram quickly erased the biggest lead of the second half with eight-straight points as a three from Gordon cut it to 70-69.
Nearing crunch time inside Price Gymnasium, Sartain sunk a three-point shot tying the game at 76 with just under five minutes left in regulation.
Three minutes later, Elijah Meredith answered back, putting in a three giving the Fighting Scots a 79-76 lead. In the final minute, a jumper from Gordon put Hiram up 81-79. Najee Hardaway tied the game at 81 with 25 seconds left as Hiram had one last possession to work with.
With time expiring, Beans Jr. pulled up from the elbow and drained a jump shot clinching the win.
"That was a true team win," said Head Coach
Taylor Roth. "Our kids are playing extremely hard and they believe. That is more than half the battle."
Gordon and Sartain each had 17 points to lead Hiram in the scoring department. Gordon had a team-high six assists along with four rebounds. Sartain led the team with nine rebounds and five three-point shots made. Ten different Terriers ended with at least two points scored in the win.
Meredith and Billings led the team with 26 and 22 points for Wooster.
As a team, Hiram shot 45.1% from the floor, 38.2% from three and 75% from the free-throw line.
This is the first victory over Wooster since the 2016-17 season when the Terriers beat then #17 ranked Wooster 72-68.
With the win, Hiram moves to 7-10 on the year and 4-7 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. The team has now won three of their last four games and have won two in a row inside Price Gymnasium.
NCAC play rolls on as Hiram welcomes DePauw into Price Gymnasium on Sunday, Jan. 30 with a tip-off time of 4 p.m.
