HIRAM, Ohio – January 26, 2022 – Hiram men's basketball defeated Allegheny, 89-77, in a home North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) game inside Price Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Back-to-back jump shots from
Oliver Clingain and
Spencer Willman pushed an early Hiram lead to 12-6 almost five minutes into the game.
A few minutes later, Brian Roberts Jr. added two free throws, followed by a three-point shot that cut the Terrier lead to 16-13. Roberts Jr. made two more three-point shots about two minutes later as the Gators now controlled a 21-16 lead.
Hiram slowly but surely crept back into the game in the middle of the first half. After a
Spencer Willman free throw, a
Texan Moulton layup and a
Doug Sartain three, Hiram now had a lead with 8:01 left in the first half.
The tight contest continued as the first half started to come to a close. An and-one opportunity was successful for
Brodgie Gordon as he tied the game at 35 with under four minutes left in the first half.
Jordan Greynolds put in a layup for the final bucket of the half for the Gators. Closing out the half,
Kevin Beans Jr. made two consecutive layups as Hiram hit the locker room up 42-39 at the half.
The home team came out hot starting the second half, scoring eight consecutive points.
Oliver Clingain made a layup, followed by two
Ivan Yang free throws and a
Chance Wells three, putting Hiram up 49-41 with 17:35 left in the first half.
As they did in the first half, Allegheny slowly started to come back as the Gators took control of the lead once again after a Luke Barker layup made it 55-54 with under 14 minutes to go.
In another run by Hiram, Beans Jr. connected on his and-one opportunity, putting the Terriers up 65-64 after the made free throw with about nine minutes to go.
With under five minutes remaining in the contest, a Yang layup tied the game at 71 as the game remained tight. Holding onto a 73-71 lead, Allegheny's Preston Turk put in a three giving the road team a brief 74-73 lead.
Back-to-back made shots from Gordon, a layup and a three, stretched the Terrier lead to 78-74. Gordon also scored the next five points giving Hiram the victory. Six made free throws ended the scoring for Hiram, as Gordon, Yang and Beans Jr. closed it out.
Gordon led the way for the Terriers with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Willman and Clingain reached the double-figure mark, each scoring 14 points. Clingain picked up his second double-double of the season collecting 13 rebounds.
Every player to enter the game for Hiram scored in the victory.
"That was probably our best game start to finish in terms of our competitive maturity," said Head Coach
Taylor Roth. "We played really hard and had many contributions, I am really proud of our group for earning this one."
As a team, Hiram shot 49.3% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the arc. The Terriers also went 11-12 from the free-throw line.
Brian Roberts Jr. scored 31 for Allegheny with Caden Hinckley finishing with 20.
With the win, Hiram moves to 6-10 on the year and 3-7 in NCAC play as the team begins to hit the home stretch of the season. The team has a quick turnaround hosting Wooster on Friday, Jan. 28 inside Price Gymnasium.
