HIRAM, Ohio – January 23, 2022 – Hiram men's volleyball defeated Wittenberg, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon inside Price Gymnasium as the Terriers remain undefeated at home.
Set one was a back-and-forth affair all the way until the end with both team's trading points. Jack Boone gave the Tigers a brief lead of 8-6 early in the first set. The tight set continued on as each team had three-point runs in the middle portion. After Wittenberg took a 12-10 lead, a
Kilvio Montero service ace capped off a three-point run for the Terriers with a slight 13-12 lead.
A service error from Hiram knotted the game up at 20 before Wittenberg took the slight 21-20 lead. Hiram closed out the first set picking up five of the final six points finished off by two
Tom Supan kills as the home team won set one, 25-22.
Hiram jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the begging of set two with multiple Supan service aces. The Terriers extended their lead further, as four-straight points boosted the lead to 11-5 with two
Nathan Cassell service aces. The Tigers quickly responded with four points of their own as they shrunk the Hiram lead to 11-9. Hiram slowly began to break away after
Matthew Albano made the score 15-10 after a service ace.
Back-to-back attack errors from the Terriers saw Wittenberg come back with the score 21-17, but the comeback wouldn't be enough. After trading points late, Supan closed it out with an ace as Hiram took set two, 25-21.
In set three a four-point run early gave Hiram some breathing room after a service ace from Montero made it 6-3. The lead continued to slightly grow as a service error and a bad set from Wittenberg increased the lead to 12-8. Another Montero service ace extended the lead to 17-10, as Hiram sat in the driver's seat to win the set and match.
Wittenberg looked to not let that happen as five-straight points saw the Tigers cut the Hiram lead to 19-17. As the third set came down to the wire, Hiram clinched it with four of the final five points as Cassell finished the set and match with a kill.
As a team, Hiram had a hitting percentage of .195 with 33 kills, 30 assists and 38 digs.
Supan and Montero led the team with 11 and nine kills.
Andrew Diaz de Padilla tallied 22 assists along with seven digs.
Ben Moseley finished with eight digs to lead the team. Freshman
Garrett Scheidegger led with two block assists.
Hiram improves to 2-1 on the young season as the Terriers remain undefeated at home at 2-0.
The team next hits the court for its first road tri-match playing Marymount (Va.) and Lancaster Bible in Lancaster, Pa. with the first match starting at 1 p.m.
