Hiram Men's Basketball Takes Down Kenyon for First NCAC Win

HIRAM, Ohio – January 10, 2022 – Hiram men's basketball defeated Kenyon, 77-65, in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup Monday night.

Kenyon and Hiram started the contest with back-and-forth play as neither team jumped ahead early. About four minutes into the game, Spencer Willman made a layup giving the Terriers a slight 6-2 advantage,

As the first half progressed, both teams continued to trade baskets, as it remained a one-possession game at the midway point. Texan Moutlon put in a layup with 8:11 left in the first half, giving the home team a 15-12 advantage.

Hiram looked to pull away in the final minutes of the first half, as Michael Ewart made a jumper putting the home side up 26-21. With 36 seconds left in the half, Chance Wells drained a three, as the Terriers headed into the locker room up 31-28.

The Terriers began to pull away at the start of the second half, as Oliver Clingain made a jumper putting Hiram up 39-32. The Lords, however, quickly came back cutting the Hiram lead to 41-40.
An 11-0 run from the home team pushed the Terriers to a 52-40 lead that was capped off by a Kevin Beans Jr. jumper with 9:42 left in the second half.

Hiram's lead held steady down the stretch run of the contest, but Kenyon kept it in striking distance. After two made free throws from Miles Versa, the Lords now trailed 61-56 with 4:09 remaining.
In the closing minute of the game, five made free throws, four of which from Brodgie Gordon, helped get Hiram to a double-digit victory winning 77-65.

"I was really proud of our effort," said Head Coach Taylor Roth. "We weren't perfect, but we just stayed with it, stuck to our principles and dug in on defense. There were a lot of key contributions off the bench which was very encouraging."

Four different Terriers reached the double-figure mark in the victory. Gordon had 15, Ewart 12, Cox 11 and Clingain ten. Ewart collected ten rebounds with Clingain grabbing nine. Gordon also had five assists to go along with three steals.

For the game, Hiram shot 46.0% from the field with a 26.3% three-point percentage.

With the win, Hiram improves to 4-8 on the season as the team picks up their first conference win of the season to go to 1-5.

The team continues with NCAC play, as Wabash comes to Price Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 14 with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
