WASHINGTON, Pa. – September 4, 2021 – Hiram men's soccer defeated Washington & Jefferson 3-1 on Saturday afternoon for the first win of the 2021 season.
Two first half goals propelled Hiram out to a 2-0 lead in the first 45 minutes of the match.
Joseph Suarez netted his first goal of the year off of a
Mickyas Maru throw in at the 36
th minute. Less than five minutes later,
Ben Zuniga found the back of the net with an assist from
Isaac Opoku.
Washington & Jefferson scored their first goal of the afternoon after a successful penalty kick from Joey Feola in the 66
th minute. Opoku gave the Terriers an insurance goal in the 83
rd minute, pushing the Hiram lead to 3-1. Opoku now has three goals on the young season after scoring two in the season opener vs. Chatham.
W&J weren't able to put a shot on goal for the remainder of the game securing the 3-1 victory for Hiram.
Along with scoring for the Terriers, Opoku led the team with four shots and Zuniga had three. As a team, Hiram put up 13 shots with nine of them being on goal.
Shelby Edwards made three saves over the course of the match for Hiram. His counterpart, Sam Miller, made six.
The victory marks the first win for Head Coach
Chris Payne, as well as the first road win of the season for the team.

th at 7:30 p.m.
