Hiram Men's Soccer Picks Up First Home Win with Overtime Goal

HIRAM, Ohio – September 18, 2021 – Hiram men's soccer defeated Bethany (W. Va.) in overtime fashion at Henry Field winning 1-0.

At the conclusion of the first 45 minutes, both teams were searching for the first goal of the match. The Bison led with eight shots as Hiram had four.

The Terriers bounced back in the second half doubling their shot total from the first half with eight.

Despite multiple good looks in half number two, no goals were scored as the match played on.

In the 96th minute, Isaac Opoku drilled the ball into the back of the net clinching the match with the overtime goal. Jeremy Sgro recorded the assist on the game winner. Opoku now has five goals on the season leading the Terriers in that category.

Bethany concluded the match with 17 shots as Hiram had 14.

Joseph Suarez led the home side with five shots, one of which was on goal. Jason Martinez and Keagan Le'Roux each had two shots.

Goalkeeper Shelby Edwards picked up the clean sheet registering seven saves. The shutout is the second of the year for the senior. Bethany goalkeeper Matteo Pintus had three saves.

With the victory Hiram improves to 2-3-2 with the first home win of the season.

The team begins a three-game road trip starting next week playing at Franciscan on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
