HIRAM, OH – September 1, 2021 – Hiram men's soccer finished with a 2-2 double overtime draw vs. Chatham in the regular season opener on Wednesday night at Charles A. Henry Field.
Charles Archer notched the first goal of the match for the road side giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 18
th minute. Heading into halftime, Chatham led in the shots department at 9-5 with Terriers goalkeeper
Shelby Edwards collecting four saves at the midway point.
Pascal Despinos doubled the Cougars lead in the 48
th minute stretching the Chatham lead to 2-0.
In what would be a busy half of shots for the Terriers,
Isaac Opoku drilled the first Hiram goal of the year in the 51
st minute with
Noah Cieza earning the assist. 15 minutes later, Opoku scored again in the 66
th minute, this time on an
Albert Gallegos assist.
Despite eight shots from Hiram in the two overtime periods, the game would end in a draw. Hiram finished the game with 23 shots and Chatham with 17. Edwards made eight total saves on the night and didn't face a shot on goal in either overtime period. Chatham goalkeeper Trevor Rose made three saves in the double overtime match.
Joseph Suarez led the team with five shots on the night, with Opoku and
Jason Martinez each having four. 16 total Terriers saw the field over the course of the 110-minute match.
Hiram plays their first road match of the season at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
