HIRAM, Ohio - May 4, 2021 – The Hiram College Department of Athletics is excited to announce its 2020-21 induction class of Hiram's Ohio Chi Chapter of the Chi Alpha Sigma national scholar-athlete society.
"Chi Alpha Sigma is a celebration of the NCAA Division III philosophy in action, as each year we get to highlight the student-athletes who have demonstrated the greatest leadership in modeling how academics and athletics are best balanced at Hiram College." Director of Athletics Todd W. Hibbs said. "This is one of the greatest honors in our athletic department and we congratulate each of you."
Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes college student-athletes who receive a varsity letter in their sport, achieve junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full-time semester and earn a 3.4 or higher cumulative grade point average.
Hiram's 2020-21 class features 20 inductees representing 10 athletic teams with an average GPA of 3.63, including two inductees with a cumulative GPA over 3.90.
"I am so impressed by the 2021 inductees to Chi Alpha Sigma," Head Swimming & Diving Coach and Faculty Advisor
Matt Sorrick said. "Not only have these student-athletes demonstrated outstanding academic abilities, they have accomplished this during a pandemic which has changed the way faculty teach and students learn. This demonstrates their ability to navigate a changing learning environment while maintaining academic excellence. Congratulations to all of these exceptional student-athletes."
Founded in 1996 at fellow North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) member DePauw University by then head football coach, Nick Mourouzis, Chi Alpha Sigma is the first national scholar-athlete society to honor collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition.
The organization's five main purposes are to encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges, to recognize outstanding academic achievements by intercollegiate varsity sport student-athletes, to encourage good citizenship, moral character, and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletes, to recognize and honor individual student-athletes, his/her team, sport athletic department, and university, and to mentor and provide leadership to other athletes.
Hiram is one of nine schools within the NCAC, 139 within NCAA Division III and 309 within the NCAA, NCCAA and NAIA with current Chi Alpha Sigma chapters.
