Hiram Baseball Sweeps Oberlin in Road Doubleheader

OBERLIN, Ohio – Sunday, May 2 – Hiram Terriers baseball took both games of a doubleheader at Oberlin winning in game one 6-3 and taking game two 18-7.

GAME 1: Both teams put up runs in the first inning starting with Hiram scoring three in the top of the first inning. Cody Wilson came across the plate on wild pitch after starting the game being hit by a pitch.

Kyle Workman then singled in David Paus and Chaisson Marrs pushing the Hiram lead to 3-0.

Oberlin would take a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Lawrence Hamilton scored from third base after a throw down to second base.

Michael Corsillo reached on a fielder's choice allowing Tanner Allison and Aidan Jantz to score extending the lead to 5-1. Once again Oberlin answered in the bottom of the inning as Jay Aghanya hit an RBI double.

Aghanya collected another RBI in the fifth with an RBI single as Oberlin still trailed 5-3.

Workman picked up another RBI hit in the seventh providing an insurance run for Hiram. Marrs scored as the Terriers would hang on and take game one 6-3.

Wilson and Workman had two hits in game one as Workman notched three RBI. Aidan Jantz and Curtis Caithaml each had one hit.

Robert James made the start and picked up the win going 4.1 innings allowing two earned runs with four punch outs. The right handed pitcher is now 3-3 on the season.

Sam Boyle and Jacob Kocuba finished off the game coming out of the bullpen allowing no runs. Boyle went 1.2 innings striking out one and Kocuba earned his third save of the season with a scoreless seventh.

Zachary Bayfield took the loss for Oberlin.

GAME 2: Hamilton started the scoring for the home side with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Aghanya made the Oberlin lead 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the same inning.

A Kyle Adams RBI single put Hiram on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Between the third and fifth innings the Hiram bats stayed hot. In the third inning Workman walked with the bases loaded followed by a two run single from Evan Fairbanks. Fred Wright then singled in Workman for the four run inning.

After Oberlin answered with a three run bottom of the third, Hiram didn't slow down at the plate. A two run triple from Marrs started the scoring. Caithaml and Kyle Adams each had RBI singles in the inning and Evan Fairbanks had a two run double.

The Terriers topped the previous two innings by scoring seven runs in the fifth. Marrs and Caithaml had RBI singles with Fairbanks hitting the second Hiram triple of the day that scored two. Fairbanks would come in to score on a throwing error by the catcher. Michael Corsillo hit a two run single making it 17-7 at the conclusion of the fifth inning.

Hiram added its final run in the seventh when Marrs reached on a fielder's choice allowing Fred Wright to score.

Every starter for the Terriers recorded at least one hit in game two. Fairbanks had a perfect 4-for-4 game with five RBI and three runs scored. Corsillo also had four hits in the game with two runs and two RBI. Wilson, Marrs, Caithaml and Adams had two hits. Marrs recorded four RBI with two runs scored.

John Lusnek made the start for Hiram with Ben Gustely, Zachary Scalf and Matt Norton all making appearances. Gustely picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-5. Luigi Smarro took the loss for Oberlin.

The 18 runs scored are the most runs scored this season. Additionally, the 18 runs, 21 hits and 17 RBI are all tied for the fourth-most in program history.

With the win Hiram improves to 10-28 on the season. The Terriers return home for their final regular season doubleheader on Saturday, May 8 with a matchup against Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
