Hiram Baseball Splits Senior Day DH With a Walk-off Victory

HIRAM, Ohio – May 8, 2021 – Hiram baseball completed their season today splitting a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan. The Terriers lost game one 12-2 and won game two 6-5 on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh.

GAME 1: Senior Matt Norton started the game for Hiram pitching two scoreless innings to start the contest.

In the third inning DJ Neff hit a two-run home run for Ohio Wesleyan getting them on the scoreboard. In the same inning, Davis Graham scored after Lucas Stetter reached on a fielder's choice making it 3-0.

OWU extended their lead in the fifth inning to 7-0. Izaiah Withrow hit an RBI double followed with Stetter scoring on a throwing error. Stiteler then hit a two-run double.

The Battling Bishops added one more run in the sixth taking an 8-0 lead.

Fred Wright put the Terriers on the scoreboard with an RBI single scoring Chaisson Marrs. In the same inning, Kyle Adams hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Evan Fairbanks as Hiram cut the lead to 8-2.

Ohio Wesleyan added four more to their lead in the top of the seventh taking game one 12-2.

Cody Wilson had two hits for the Terriers in the leadoff spot in game one. Senior David Paus added a hit with fellow senior Parker Emerine picking up a walk.

Along with Norton, senior Case Wiles, Daniel Quintero Jr., Robert James, Sam Boyle and Neil Robertson all made appearances in game one. Wiles allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of work.

Ethan Soderna (1-5) took home the victory for Ohio Wesleyan in game one with Norton (0-1) picking up the loss.

GAME 2: Austin Harper started the scoring for Ohio Wesleyan with an RBI single in the top of the first. OWU added four runs in the second inning headlined by DJ Neff hitting an RBI double.

Hiram began the comeback in the third inning storming back with five runs. With the bases loaded, Curtis Caithaml drilled an RBI single scoring Michael Corsillo.

Back-to-back bases loaded walks by Evan Fairbanks and Tanner Allison brought in two more runs making it 5-3. Fred Wright continued the inning with an RBI single scoring Caithaml. Andrew Church tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Fairbanks making it 5-5 at the completion of the third inning.

Jacob Kocuba replaced starting pitcher Stephen Javorek pitching the final four innings. Kocuba allowed two hits between the fourth and sixth innings. At the plate Hiram had one hit between that same time frame heading into the seventh inning.

Andy Anthony came into pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning for Ohio Wesleyan. On just the second pitch of the at bat Kyle Workman hit a solo home run over the left field fence to win it for the Terriers. It was the second-career home run for Workman as the junior clinched the 11th victory of the season for Hiram.

Kocuba (3-6) picked up the win after four scoreless innings of relief. The right handed pitcher had four strikeouts allowing two hits with one walk. Andy Anthony (0-3) took the loss for OWU.

Hiram finishes the 2021 season with a record of 11-29. The 11 wins are a five-win improvement from 2019 when the team went 6-29-1 in Head Coach Phil Brua's first season.

Corsillo finished the year with a conference high 23 stolen bases as the sophomore appeared and started in all 40 games finishing with a .374 batting average. The 23 stolen bases are the second most in a single season in program history. Caithaml finished the year with a .378 batting average, the highest on the team.

Kocuba finished the year with a team best 3.27 ERA. In his first collegiate season Kocuba appeared in 17 games pitching 44 innings getting 39 strikeouts. The right handed pitcher also notched a team high in saves with three.
