HIRAM, Ohio – May 1, 2021 – Hiram College softball beat Kenyon twice at Herndon Field winning in game one, 15-0, and winning, 8-0, in game two with both games coming in a run-rule shortened five innings.
GAME 1: Hiram's bats were locked and loaded from the beginning of the ballgame.
Abriana Schwartz led off the game with a double. Schwartz would come around the score on a throwing error.
The next three Terriers,
Giselle Bahena,
Mariah Sheffield and
Angel Santellan all had singles. Additionally,
Meaghan Stafford hit an RBI sacrifice fly.
Giselle Chavez,
Viviana Macias and Schwartz had RBI hits. At the conclusion of the first inning Hiram led 7-0.
Sheffield started the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single. Stafford followed that with an RBI single of her own.
Lauryn Olguin then drilled a two run double pushing the lead to 12-0.
Schwartz continued the hot inning with an RBI double. Bahena and Sheffield had RBI singles to close out the inning with 15 runs.
Kaitlyn Hager dazzled on the mound pitching all five innings for the shutout victory. Hager earned her second win of the season picking up three strikeouts allowing just three hits.
Sam Goldenson (0-3) took the loss for Kenyon.
Three different Terriers had three hits games in Schwartz, Bahena and Sheffield. Olguin had a hit with two RBI and Macias also had two runs, two hits and an RBI.
The 15 runs scored are the most scored in a game this season for Hiram.
GAME 2: Each team had their bats silenced in the first two innings of game two. Schwartz started the scoring for the home team in the third inning hitting an RBI double scoring
Melissa Galindo.
In the fourth inning Hiram scored seven runs to clinch the five inning victory.
Giselle Chavez hit a two run single, then scored on a throwing error.
Hager would hit a single to the pitcher scoring two runs with Bahena singling her in. Capping off the scoring was a Sheffield RBI double making it 8-0.
The duo of
Jeskari Rodriguez and
Angel Santellan were on the mound in game two. Rodriguez made the start pitching the first three innings while striking out four. Santellan pitched the final two allowing just one hit and picking up her seventh win of the season. The tandem combined for the second shutout of the day.
Emily Pater (0-8) picked up the loss for Kenyon.
In game two eight different Terriers recorded at least one hit. Hager and Chavez had two RBI for Hiram. Bahena and Santellan had two hits.
With the win Hiram improves to 22-13. Hiram picked up its 20th win last night for their first 20-win season since 2011. 22 wins are also the most in a season for the Terriers since 2011 when the team finished 29-14.
Hiram takes the field again tomorrow, Sunday May 2, with a doubleheader against Kenyon beginning at 1 p.m. The Terriers will look to go for the season sweep vs. the Ladies tomorrow.
