HIRAM, Ohio - May 1, 2021 – Hiram Terriers baseball dropped a couple of close games to the Kenyon College Lords on Saturday at Fishel Field at Proverbs Park, falling in extras in game one, 9-3, and 6-1 in game two. Hiram drops to 8-28 following the doubleheader, while Kenyon moves to 6-6 with the two wins.
GAME 1: KENYON 9, HIRAM 3 (8 INN).
Stephen Javorek worked a 1-2-3 first, and struck out the first two batters of the second, before Kenyon got on the scoreboard first, taking advantage of a Hiram error to plate a pair of unearned runs and take a 2-0 lead.
Javorek settled down and worked a 1-2-3 third, before
Chaisson Marrs led off the bottom of the frame with a double, but was left on third base following a pair of strikeouts.
Kenyon got another unearned run in the top of the fourth, extending their lead to 3-0 when Jake Brown reached on a Terrier fielding error. And Kenyon looked to add to their lead in the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, but Javorek got Andrew Rabinowitz to ground into a double play, and Kyle Dwyer to fly out to center to get out of the inning unscatched.
Both teams went in order in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, before Hiram got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back singles and a double steal from
Cody Wilson and
Curtis Caithaml put two-on and one-out for
David Paus, who's groundout gave Hiram their first run of the game.
A fielding error then allowed
Evan Fairbanks to reach, scoring Caithaml from third to cut Kenyon's lead to 3-2.
The Lords picked up a pair of base runners in the top of the seventh on a pair of singles, but
Ben Gustely, who relieved Javorek with two outs, got Rabinowitz to strike out looking to end the inning and give Hiram a chance to tie things up in the bottom of the seventh.
Kyle Adams drew a hit-by-pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh, took second on Marrs sacrifice bunt and third on
Michael Corsillo's groundout before scoring on Wilson's RBI single to knot the score at 3-all.
But the Terriers couldn't bring Wilson home, and the Lords came through with six runs on six hits in the top of the eighth to take a 9-3 lead in extra innings, before Patrick Craig finished off the victory in the bottom of the frame.
Gustely (0-5) took the loss for Hiram, while Craig (1-3) earned the win for the Lords. Javorek took a no-decision, allowing three unearned runs on six hits, striking out three over 6.2 innings pitched.
Wilson and Caithaml each went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Terriers, while Wilson and Paus each added RBI.
GAME 2: KENYON 6, HIRAM 1. After
Daniel Quintero Jr. worked around a pair of base runners over the first two frames, Hiram got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second.
With two outs, Adams singled to center, and Corsillo followed with a single down the left-field line to put two on for Wilson. And with Wilson at the plate, Adams and Corsillo executed a double-steal to perfection, and Adams came on the catcher's errant throw to give Hiram a 1-0 lead.
The Terriers would hold that 1-0 lead till the top of the fifth. A walk and a single put two on with two outs for Dwyer, who's RBI single scored Will Sturgeon to even the score at 1-1.
Jacob Kocuba then relieved Quintero Jr., but Kenyon added another run on Ayden Head's RBI double to take a 2-1 lead.
And after the Terriers left a runner on in the bottom of the fifth, the Lords extended their lead to 5-1 in the sixth.
Hiram looked to answer, putting runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning, but Zach Elsawy struck out
Connor Bansek to end the inning, and keep the Terriers off the scoreboard.
Kenyon again added to their lead in the top of the seventh on Brett Henderson's RBI single, before Hiram came up to bat in the bottom of the inning down 6-1.
The Terriers put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of singles, but couldn't push any runs across against Sam Richards and fell, by the final score of 6-1.
Richards (3-1) earned the win for Kenyon, while Quintero Jr. (1-5) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out six over 4.2 innings pitched.
Caithaml again led the Terriers at the plate, going 2-for-4, while Marrs went 2-for-3 and Adams scored the Terriers' lone run, going 1-for-2.
The Terriers will next travel to Oberlin, Ohio for a doubleheader against the Yeomen on Sunday, May 2 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
