Hiram Softball Picks Up 20th Win of the Season at Case Western

CLEVELAND, Ohio – April 30, 2021 – Hiram softball split a doubleheader at Case Western Reserve falling in game one 5-4 and winning game two 5-2.

GAME 1: In the top of the first inning the Terriers loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Leah Valdez walked bringing in the first run. Lauryn Olguin was hit by a pitch again with the bases loaded making it 2-0 Hiram.

The Spartans would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Dusstyn Reynolds and Hope Yashnik each knocked RBI singles to even the contest.

Case Western would take a 4-2 lead in the third inning with Liv Thomas smacking a two run double.

Kaitlyn Hager and Mariah Sheffield would answer for the road team as the two each hit a solo home run in the fifth inning tying it at four.

Sarah Miller's solo home run in the bottom half of the inning would prove to be the game winner as the Spartans would take game one 5-4.

Hager's blast was her third of the season with Sheffield blasting her fifth and her second in as many games. Hager and Angel Santellan had two hits for Hiram. Hager also scored twice in game one.

Both starting pitchers went stayed in the circle for the entirety of the game. Hager pitched six innings tying a season high in strikeouts with five. The right hander took the loss dropping her record to 1-
2 on the season.

Sidney Brannam took the win for Case Western improving to 19-3.

GAME 2: Starting pitcher Angel Santellan helper her own cause in the second inning hitting a solo home run.

Case Western would put their first run on the board in the third inning with Arisa Cleaveland hitting a double driving in Miller making it tied at one.

Between the fourth and fifth innings both pitchers kept the opposing bats silent. Santellan and Case Western starter Savannah Gazda allowed three hits between the two innings with no additional runs allowed.

A big pinch hit two run double off the bat of Rebekah Lewan got the scoring started for Hiram in the sixth inning. Following the Lewan hit, Olguin hit an RBI single. Abriana Schwartz reached on an error allowing Lewan to score to make it 5-1.

Amanda Riely had an RBI walk with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, putting the scoring at 5-2. Santellan and the Terriers were able to get out of the inning however to hold on for the victory.

Santellan's blast was her fourth home run of the year as the freshman improves to 6-1 on the season in the circle. The right hander went the distance for Hiram while striking out three. Gazda (1-1) took the loss for CWRU.

At the plate Mariah Sheffield stayed hot providing a two hit game with a run scored. Along with her solo blast, Santellan also had two other hits with a run and an RBI. Meaghan Stafford also had a two hit game with a run scored.

With the win Hiram reaches the 20-win mark on the season as the Terriers have two more road doubleheaders in the regular season.

The team will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday May 1, with a doubleheader against Kenyon beginning at 1 p.m. at Herndon Field.
