HIRAM, Ohio - April 24, 2021 – Hiram Terriers Softball split their Senior Day doubleheader against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, taking game one, 1-0, before falling in game two, 3-0, to snap their program-record 13-game winning streak. With the win, the Terriers move to 19-10 on the year, while the Fighting Scots drop to 15-7.
GAME 1: HIRAM 1, WOOSTER 0. Though the Terriers and Fighting Scots each recorded hits within the first two frames, game one proved to be a pitcher's duel between Wooster's Olivia Johnson and
Kaitlyn Hager.
Hager worked around a two-out single in the top of the first, striking out a pair looking, while Johnson struck out a pair with
Ryleigh Webb at first in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third, Wooster put two on for Molly Likins, who singled through the left side, but
Larissa Baeza threw Brooke Swain out at home to get the Terriers out of the inning unscathed.
The Terriers put base runners on in the bottom of the third and fourth, before finally breaking through in the fifth. Baeza reached on an error and
Abriana Schwartz walked to put two on with on out for Hager, who helped herself out with an RBI single, scoring Baeza from second to give Hiram a 1-0 lead.
Hager then shut the Fighting Scots down in the top of the sixth, working around a one-out single, and worked a 1-2-3 top of the seventh to finish off the 1-0 Terrier victory.
Hager (1-0) earned the complete-game win, allowing just five hits while striking out five over 7.0 innings pitched. Johnson (6-4) took the loss for Wooster, allowing one run, unearned, on five hits, striking out eight over 7.0 innings pitched.
Hager also led the Terriers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Schwartz went 1-for-1 with a walk.
GAME 2: WOOSTER 3, HIRAM 0. After
Jeskari Rodriguez stranded two runners in the top of the first, neither side was able to get anything going in the top of the third.
Swain led off the top of the third with a walk and stole second, advancing to third on Likins fly out to left before scoring on a passed ball to give Wooster a 1-0 lead.
Both teams went 1-2-3 over the next two frames, before Hager picked up the Terriers first hit in the bottom of the fourth, a double to left center, but was left stranded at second.
In the top of the fifth,
Angel Santellan worked around a pair of base runners to keep Wooster from extending their lead, but Hiram couldn't answer, going in order in the bottom of the frame.
A one-out walk and Schwartz's sacrifice bunt gave Hiram a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth, but Baeza was thrown out trying to score on Hager's single, keeping the Terriers off the scoreboard.
In the top of the seventh, Wooster took advantage of a pair of Hiram errors, taking on two more runs to extend their lead to 3-0. And while
Giselle Bahena led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to deep left, the Terriers weren't able to mount a rally and fell, 3-0, snapping their 13-game winning streak.
Rodriguez (9-2) took the loss for Hiram, allowing one unearned run over 2.2 innings pitched, striking out and walking two, while Marissa Norgrove (8-2) earned the win for the Fighting Scots.
Santellan pitched 4.1 innings in relief, allowing a pair of unearned runs, while Hager again led Hiram at the plate, going 2-for-3.
The Terriers will look to start a new winning streak, when they wrap up their four-game set on the road against The College of Wooster on Sunday, April 25 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
