OBERLIN, Ohio – April 22, 2021 – Hiram softball defeated Oberlin twice on Thursday afternoon winning game one by a final score of 7-3 and winning game two 11-10. With the two wins the Terriers have now won 12 games in a row breaking the program record for most consecutive wins.
GAME 1: A
Mariah Sheffield RBI single got the Terriers off and running in the top of the first inning. Sheffield scored
Abriana Schwartz on the play. Sheffield delivered again at the plate in the third inning with a two run double pushing the lead to 2-0.
Caley Dunlop put Oberlin on the scoreboard knocking a three run home run in the bottom half of the inning.
In the fifth inning
Kaitlyn Hager tied the ballgame at three with an RBI single. The road team would notch some additional runs in the sixth inning. Schwartz reached on a fielder's choice which scored
Giselle Chavez. Hager picked up another RBI single followed by
Giselle Bahena hitting a two run double helping the Terriers win 7-3.
Jeskari Rodriguez was in the circle for Hiram delivering a complete game. Rodriguez picked up her ninth win of the season pitching seven innings with five strikeouts. This is the second straight game the left handed pitcher has thrown a complete game and her fourth on the season.
At the plate the top of the order continued their hitting ways. Schwartz had a game high four runs scored with Hager adding two hits and two RBI. Sheffield also had two hits with two RBI and Bahena added on with two RBI of her own.
Emily Tucci (1-2) took the loss for Oberlin in two innings of relief.
GAME 2: Maddison Paladino hit a three run home run in the top of the first inning for Oberlin.
In the second inning Hiram answered with two home runs of their own.
Lauryn Olguin delivered with a three run home run followed by a Hager two run shot.
It was a big inning at the plate for the Terriers in the fourth frame. Bahena reached on a fielder's choice scoring Olguin. Sheffield hit an RBI single scoring Schwartz followed by
Lexa Avalos reaching on a fielder's choice scoring Hager.
Melissa Galindo finished the scoring in the inning with an RBI single scoring Sheffield.
Pitcher
Angel Santellan hit a two run single scoring Hager and Olguin making it 11-4. The Yeowomen would storm back with sixth runs between the fifth and seventh innings, but would fall short as Hiram would go on and win 11-10.
The tandem of Rodriguez and Santellan provided the pitching in game two. Santellan started and picked up the win to improve to 5-0. Rodriguez came in for the final eight outs and picked up her first save of the season.
Schwartz, Hager, Santellan and Olguin all had two hits. Olguin had three RBI thanks to her home run and Hager and Santellan had two RBI each. Additionally, at the plate Hiram had ten walks as a team.
Hiram has now won 12 games in a row setting a new program record. The 18 wins are the most since the 2012 season when the team won 19 games.
The Terriers will next play on Saturday, April 24 with a doubleheader against Wooster starting at 11 a.m.
