HIRAM, Ohio – April 11, 2021 – Hiram softball swept Kenyon at home Sunday afternoon winning game one 4-0 and winning game two 3-2 at Herndon Field.
GAME 1: In the top of the first inning
Giselle Bahena hit an RBI triple scoring
Abriana Schwartz making it 1-0 Hiram.
Mariah Sheffield hit her second home run of the weekend knocking in Bahena to make it 3-0 Terriers.
That was all the run support that freshman
Angel Santellan needed as the right handed pitcher was dominant in the circle. Santellan earned his first collegiate victory going the distance pitching seven innings while striking out four. The seven innings were the most pitched in her career in her sixth appearance of the season.
Santellan would go on to help her own cause in the sixth inning hitting her first collegiate home run extending the Terrier lead to 4-0 on a solo shot.
Tori Rogers (0-3) took the loss for Kenyon pitching six innings and striking out two.
Additionally, at the plate Sheffield,
Melissa Galindo and
Larissa Baeza each had two hits. Sheffield had two RBI with Bahena and Santellan collecting an RBI each.
The shutout is the second of the weekend and the season with the Terriers picking up a shutout yesterday in a 10-0 victory.
GAME 2: In game two Bahena scored the first one scoring on the throw down to second after a Sheffield stolen base.
In the second inning Tori Rogers hit an RBI single scoring Kathryn Riggs evening the game at one.
Maggie Hyland would give the Ladies a 2-1 lead after hitting an RBI single.
As a pinch hitter in the fifth inning
Lexa Avalos hit an RBI single scoring
Giselle Chavez once again tying the game.
Kaitlyn Hager hit the go ahead RBI single in the same frame scoring Schwartz and making it 3-2 Hiram.
In the sixth inning the Terriers were able to stop Kenyon from tying the game after a play at the plate stopped the Ladies comeback attempt.
Jeskari Rodriguez would shut down the Kenyon offense in the top of the seventh retiring the road side in order to earn the win.
Bailey Scheck started the game and pitched two and two thirds innings with four strikeouts. Rodriguez (7-1) pitched the final four and one third innings picking up five strikeouts. The sophomore also earned a win yesterday at Kenyon and leads the squad with seven.
At the plate Bahena was the lone Terrier to record two hits. Hager and Avalos each added an RBI.
With the win Hiram improves to 12-9 and 7-1 in NCAC play. The Terriers now have won six games in a row after winning all four games against Kenyon this weekend. On the weekend the pitching staff gave up five runs.
Hiram will next play at home on Thursday, April 15 against Allegheny with a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
