HIRAM, OH. – April 15, 2021 – Hiram softball won two games against Allegheny on Thursday afternoon at Myrtis E. Herndon Field. The Terriers won game one 4-1 and also won game two 5-0 in six innings as the game was called due to darkness.
GAME 1: In the second inning pitcher
Angel Santellan hit a solo home run helping her cause putting Hiram up 1-0.
Kaitlyn Hager hit a two run RBI single scoring
Larissa Baeza and
Melissa Galindo in the fourth inning. Hager would also help score the next run when she stole second base causing
Abriana Schwartz to come home and score extending the lead to 4-0.
Allegheny would plate their lone run in the fifth inning after Joplin Osgood reached via a throwing error.
Santellan (2-0) went the distance in game one pitching her second straight complete game. The freshman allowed one earned run with four strikeouts picking up her second straight victory. Santellan homered in her second straight game with her solo home run.
Giselle Bahena and Galindo had two hits for the home team, Galindo also picked up a run scored.
Hager earned two RBI in game one including picking up a hit.
Mariah Sheffield picked up two walks.
Tori Vradenburg (0-5) took the loss for Allegheny.
GAME 2: In game two neither team could get on the scoreboard early with Santellan in the circle again for Hiram and Ashley Vitiello taking the ball for the Gators.
In the fifth inning Hiram was able to get on the scoreboard. Schwartz hit a double followed by Hager reaching first on a muffed throw bringing Schwartz around to score.
The Terriers would push their lead out in the sixth inning scoring four more runs. Santellan tripled to start the inning. As a pinch hitter Rebekah Lewin hit an RBI double scoring Santellan. Baeza hit an RBI single scoring
Leah Valdez. Bahena then pushed the lead out to 5-0 with a two run single.
The game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness.
Santellan (3-0) again pitched every inning for Hiram tossing six innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts. On the day the freshman threw 13 innings allowing just one earned run with seven punch outs and two victories. In the last six games Hiram has allowed zero runs three times.
At the plate Schwartz, Bahena and Santellan had two hits each. Schwartz also scored twice in the second game with Bahena tallying two RBI.
The eight game win streak is the longest winning streak since the 2011 season. The Terriers have now won eight straight games and are 9-1 in NCAC play.
Hiram (14-9) will next play the field at Allegheny on Saturday, April 17 with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
