CATTARAUGUS COUNTY, N.Y. – March 30, 2021 – Hiram baseball split a doubleheader on Tuesday at Hilbert (N.Y.) dropping game one 12-7 and winning game two 18-3.
GAME 1: Hiram got on the scoreboard first in game number one with
Cole Bates hitting an RBI single scoring
Chaisson Marrs making it 1-0 Terriers.
In the third inning Hilbert jumped out for four runs. James Disanti hit a two run single and Miguel Guzman Caez added an RBI single of his own. Matt Kellner reached on an error causing Disanti to score.
Hiram would take back the lead in the fifth inning scoring three runs. Marrs hit a solo home run, his first collegiate home run, and
Evan Fairbanks hit an RBI single scoring
Kyle Adams. Pakrer Emerine hit a two run double that gave the road team a 5-4 lead.
Hilbert answered however with a five run bottom half of the inning headlined by Caez hitting a three run home run. The Hawks scored two more runs taking back the lead at 9-5.
The Hawks tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 12-7.
In the seventh and final inning
Michael Corsillo reached on a fielder's choice scoring Emerine. Marrs would then reach first on an error causing
Andrew Church to score. Hilbert would hold on to win however, taking game one 12-7.
Stephen Javorek (1-1) made the start for Hiram and took the loss.
Marrs went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot for the Terriers with a solo home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Evan Fairbanks also collected a multiple hit game going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Emerine added two RBIs with a run and a walk.
Aydan Rolph (1-1) took the win for Hilbert pitching two innings of relief.
GAME 2: Jacob Kocuba and the Hiram bats took center stage in game two. The freshman right hander threw six innings giving up just three hits with zero earned runs and 11 strikeouts. Kocuba (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory.
Michael Corsillo started the scoring for the Terriers with a two run double in the second inning. In the same frame,
Chaisson Marrs also collected a two run single stretching the Hiram lead to 4-0. Hilbert would get three runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but their scoring would stop there.
Freshman
Fred Wright hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his first collegiate hit, making the Hiram lead 5-3.
From there the Terriers would score the remaining 13 runs. Following Wright's solo shot Hiram scored seven more runs in the fourth inning.
Evan Fairbanks reached on an error causing Corsillo to score.
David Paus hit an RBI single which was followed up by
Devin Houdeshell hitting a two run double. Freshman
Connor Bansek picked up his first collegiate hit, an RBI single, scoring Houdeshell. Corsillo hit an RBI double making the lead 12-3 after four innings.
Corsillo followed up his fourth inning with an RBI single to start the sixth.
Kyle Adams then hit an RBI single scoring
Fred Wright.
TJ Staton had a pinch walk with the bases loaded scoring Corsillo.
The Terriers added three more runs in the seventh inning. Corsillo hit an RBI single, his fifth RBI of the day, scoring
Ben Gregg. Marrs added an RBI bases loaded walk with
Kyle Adams hitting an RBI groundout.
Kocuba's six innings pitched are the most pitched in his early collegiate career. The 11 strikeouts also top his previous high of three. Ben Gustley added a scoreless inning of relief in the second contest.
Corsillo went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs and five RBIs. Paus added three hits with two runs scored and an RBI.
Fred Wright, in his second collegiate start, two hits with two runs scored and an RBI.
The 18 runs scored for the Terriers are the most scored in a win since March 14, 2019 when Hiram defeated Bluffton 15-3.
