Hiram Softball Takes One Win At Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – March 28, 2021 – Hiram softball split a doubleheader at Denison on Sunday afternoon winning game one, 8-5 and dropping game two 9-1 in five innings.  

GAME 1: Denison struck first in the game number one with a four run second inning. Clara Wolff hit a two run single followed by Gabi Dufresne and Claire Powell having RBI hits of their own.

Hiram however came back big in the fifth inning scoring eight runs. Ryleigh Webb and Abriana Schwartz got the scoring started hit having RBI base hits. Webb brought in Jeskari Rodriguez and Schwartz scored Webb and Larissa Baeza to make it 4-3 Denison.

Giselle Bahena and Kaitlyn Hager each would reach base on a fielder's choice. Leah Valdez would score after a throwing error evening the ballgame at four. Schwartz was able to score on Hager fielder's choice as the Terriers took the 5-4 lead.

Mariah Sheffield's RBI single brought in three more Terriers. Bahena and Hager each scored on the play on a throwing error as Melissa Galindo also crossed the plate for Hiram extending the lead to 8-4.

Denison scored one in the seventh inning as the Terriers claimed victory in game one by a score of 8-5.

Schwartz and Webb each had two hits for the road team in game one. Schwartz was also the lone Terrier to have two RBIs as the freshman also scored a run.

Jeskari Rodriguez was in the circle for Hiram as she picked up her third win of the season. Coming in as a reliever, Rodriguez fired five and two thirds innings pitched with no earned runs and a strikeout.

Taylor Faulkenbe (0-3) took the loss for Denison.

GAME 2: As they did in game one, Denison scored first and this time didn't trail again.

The Big Red went up 1-0 after a Taylor Faulkenbe RBI single in the first inning. The home side would then add on another run in the third inning with Gabi Dufresne scoring on a wild pitch.

Mariah Sheffield would put the Terriers on the scoreboard with an RBI single scoring Giselle Bahena making it 2-1.

Denison would score in the fourth and fifth innings to end it early. Maggie Ballentin hit a two run single in the fourth frame pushing the Big Red lead to 4-1.

In the fifth inning Denison hit two extra base hits to clinch it. Lexi Knipp hit a two run double followed by Dufresne hitting a two run triple.

The Big Red won 9-1 in five innings.

Sheffield picked up a hit and an RBI in the second contest for the Terriers.  Bailey Scheck (2-5) took the loss for Hiram.

Hiram (5-8) will next play home against Wooster on Saturday, April 3 with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m.
