HIRAM, Ohio – March 27, 2021 – Hiram Terriers softball split a doubleheader playing Denison losing game one 8-7, and winning game two 5-2 at Herndon Field on Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1: Denison scored first in game number one with two extra base hits in the first inning. Taylor Faulkenbe hit a two run double and Lexi Knipp followed it with an RBI single making it 2-0 Big Red.
The visiting team added on to their lead in the next frame stretching their lead to 4-0.
Ryleigh Webb hit an RBI single, followed by a
Leah Valdez two run double shrinking the lead the Denison lead to 4-3.
The Big Red brought three more runners across the plate in the third inning making it 7-3.
In the final three innings of the ballgame both teams traded runs.
Mariah Sheffield hit a two run double to make it 7-5.
Kaitlyn Hager hit an RBI single as the Terriers trailed by just one run at 7-6.
Each team added a run in the seventh and final frame, as Denison held on to win game one 8-7.
Sheffield, Webb and Valdez each had two hits for the Terriers. Sheffield and Valdez also added two RBIs.
Bailey Scheck (2-4) took the loss for Hiram.
GAME 2: In game number two the action took place early. Hiram jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with RBI singles from
Mariah Sheffield and
Kaitlyn Hager. Hager brought in
Abriana Schwartz and Sheffield scored
Giselle Bahena and Hager. The Terriers led 3-0 after the first frame.
Denison chipped back in with a two run third innings inching back in with the Terriers lead still at 3-2.
Hiram answered themselves in the bottom half of the inning with two RBI singles. Bahena singled in
Melissa Galindo and
Jeskari Rodriguez, the starting pitcher, helped herself out scoring Bahena.
In the top of the fifth inning Galindo threw out a runner at home attempting to score on a sacrifice fly saving a run and keeping the lead at 5-2.
Rodriguez went the distance in game number two for the Terriers pitching all seven innings. The Chula Vista, California native gave up two runs while striking out seven. The right hander picked up the win to move to 6-2.
Six different Terriers contributed with one hit in game number two. Bahena scored two runs while
Mariah Sheffield had two RBIs.
Hiram has a quick turnaround playing at Denison tomorrow, Sunday March 28, with a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m.
