ERIE, Pa. – March 25, 2021 – Hiram baseball split a doubleheader playing at Penn State Behrend on Thursday afternoon. The Terriers won the first game 4-2 and lost the second game 3-2 in ten innings.
GAME 1: Hiram struck first in the top of the first inning as
Curtis Caithaml was able to force a throwing error between first and second base to score
Kyle Adams.
In the third inning Anthony Slate was able to score to even the ballgame at one.
The back and forth contest continued into the fifth inning with both Hiram and Penn State Behrend each plating a run in the fifth frame.
Caithaml hit an RBI single scoring
Chaisson Marrs. The home side followed that up with a run of their own as Braden Paulinell hit an RBI single that scored Slate.
With the contest tied at two heading to the final frame, Hiram scored two more times in the seventh inning.
Evan Fairbanks walked with the bases loaded scoring Michael Corsillio.
David Paus then reached on a fielder's choice with
Kyle Adams scoring.
Penn State Behrend got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Hiram held on to win 4-2.
Daniel Quintero Jr. pitched a complete game for the Terriers going the full seven innings allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts. Both the innings pitched and strikeouts are career highs for the sophomore who threw the first complete game of the season for Hiram. The Lancaster, California native picked up the win as he improves to 1-1 on the campaign.
Colin Kelly (0-1) took the loss for Penn State Behrend going six and one third innings giving up three earned runs with four strikeouts.
Caithaml,
Kyle Workman and
Michael Corsillo each had multiple hits. Workman finished game one with three hits with Caithaml adding an RBI and a walk. Corsillo also had a run scored.
GAME 2: Stephen Javorek got the start for the Terriers in game two getting through the first two innings allowing no runs.
Penn State Behrend got on the scoreboard first in the third inning with Juston Jones hitting an RBI single. Josh Wagner followed that up hitting an RBI double stretching the Lions lead to 2-0.
In the fifth inning Hiram shortened the lead after
Kyle Workman hit an RBI single that brought
Chaisson Marrs across the plate. The Terriers tied the game at two in the next inning thanks to
Evan Fairbanks hitting an RBI double that scored
Curtis Caithaml.
Extra innings were needed to decide a winner in game two as seven innings wasn't enough. Hiram was able to add a hit in the ninth and tenth innings, but couldn't put together any further damage.
Penn State Behrend won it in the bottom of the tenth inning as Isaac Stouffer had a bases loaded walk that scored the winning Lions run.
Javorek went six innings allowing one earned run while striking out three. Ben Gustley recorded two outs on the mound pitching in relief striking out one batter.
Jacob Kocuba (0-2) took the loss for Hiram, pitching three innings giving up one earned run.
Jacob Lindow made the start for the Lions pitching eight innings giving up two earned runs and striking out four. Ryan Weaver (2-0) got the win pitching two innings of scoreless relief.
Among those with multiple hits for the Terriers included Caithaml, Marrs and
Kyle Workman. With two hits in both games of the doubleheader today Caithaml now has recorded multiple hit games in four of his last five games.
Hiram's next game will be Tuesday, March 30, playing at Hilbert (N.Y.) with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
