HIRAM, Ohio – March 24, 2021 – Hiram Terriers softball dropped two games against Case Western Reserve on Wednesday afternoon losing game one, 6-0, and dropping game two 11-2 in five innings at Myrtis E. Herndon Field.
GAME 1: Case Western took the early 1-0 lead on a Hope Yashnik RBI groundout.
Both Hiram and Case Western failed to score between innings two and four thanks to pitching from
Bailey Scheck and Sidney Brannam.
The Spartans would plate two more runs in the fifth inning with Carli Tucci hitting an RBI double and Arisa Cleaveland hitting an RBI single.
Savannah Gazda hit an RBI groundout in the sixth inning, extending the CWRU lead to 4-0. The Spartans would cap off their scoring in the bottom of the seventh with two more runs taking game one 6-0.
Freshman
Larissa Baeza went 2-for-3 and
Leah Valdez added a hit for the Terriers.
Scheck (2-3) took the defeat for Hiram pitching five and two thirds innings giving up three earned runs with a strikeout.
Brannam (6-1) went the distance for the road team, allowing three hits and striking out one.
GAME 2: The Spartans again got off to an early lead at the start of the second contest with a three run first inning. Headlining the inning was KaiLi Gross and Hope Yashnik each hitting RBI singles.
Gross followed up her first inning with a grand slam in the second inning with the Spartans jumping out to a 7-0 lead after two.
In the third inning Hiram jumped into the scoring column with
Abriana Schwartz hitting an RBI double that scored
Leah Valdez. Schwartz then scored on a throwing error cutting the Spartans lead to 7-2.
Grace Yeung then ended the contest early with her at bats in the fourth and fifth innings. Young hit a solo home run in the fourth to make it 8-2. Following up the solo shot in the fourth was a three run triple in the fifth inning giving CWRU an 11-2 lead.
The game ended early after the fifth inning due to a run rule.
Morgan Finley (0-2) took the loss for the Terriers. Sidney Brannam again pitched in game two for the Spartans picking up the win after pitching three innings giving up one earned run.

Leah Valdez all had hits for the home team.
Hiram (3-6) will next play at home against Denison on Saturday, March 27 with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
