Hiram Softball Drops Game At Ohio Wesleyan In Extra Innings

DELAWARE, Ohio – March 23, 2021 – Hiram Terriers softball lost the first game of a doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon, 3-2 in ten innings. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called early due to darkness.

GAME 1: A pitcher's duel highlighted the first game as Bailey Scheck and Katie Chittum silenced the bats early and didn't slow down for both teams.

Neither team was able to score a run in the first seven innings forcing extra innings to decide a winner. Hiram struck first when Giselle Bahena hit a ground ball causing Viviana Macias to score on an error giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning.

Ohio Wesleyan answered in the bottom half of the inning as Madison Bridger hit a single that allowed Sara Bias to score on a throwing error to even the contest at one in the eighth inning.

Rebekah Lewan's RBI single scored Kaitlyn Hager, once again giving the Terriers a one run lead at 2-1. The Battling Bishops again answered with a run of their own, as Sydney Hoover hit an RBI single bringing home Aimee Duckworth.

In the tenth inning OWU claimed victory. Sydney Hoover singled scoring Duckworth tying the ballgame at two. Bridger then hit an RBI single scoring Sara Bias with the home team taking the win at 3-2.

Scheck (2-2) was the lone pitcher used for the Terriers in game number one, pitching nine and one third innings giving up zero earned runs and striking out seven. The senior took the loss in her third straight start where she pitched at least seven innings.

Chittum (1-0) took the win in Ohio Wesleyan's first game of the year. Chittum was also the lone pitcher used for the home side. She pitched ten innings while giving up zero earned runs and throwing two strikeouts.

Abriana Schwartz and Ryleigh Webb each had two hits for the Terriers. Hager went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.

GAME 2: Three innings were played to start game two, but the contest was called early due to darkness. This game will not be resumed.

Hiram (3-4) will have a quick turnaround and play tomorrow, Wednesday March 24, with a doubleheader against Case Western Reserve scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Myrtis E. Herndon Field.
