Hiram Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader Monday Afternoon

HIRAM, Ohio – March 22, 2021 – Hiram baseball split a doubleheader on Monday, March 22, against Pitt-Greensburg taking game one, 9-4, and dropping game two, 5-3.

GAME 1: The Terriers struck early in game number one scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.

Kyle Workman and Kyle Adams led off the game with back to back singles for the home side.

Curtis Caithaml was able to reach first base on a throwing error that scored Workman. Adams then scored on a wild pitch. David Paus hit an RBI groundout scoring Caithaml to mark a 3-0 first inning lead.

Pitt. Greensburg tallied a run in the second inning, but Hiram was able to score two more in the bottom half of the inning. Workman hit an RBI single scoring Chaisson Marrs, followed by a Caithaml RBI single that brought Workman around to score.

Hiram extended their lead in the fourth inning with Kyle Adams reaching on a dropped fly ball with Marrs scoring to make it 6-1 Hiram. Caithaml hit another RBI single scoring Michael Corsillo.

The Bobcats added two runs in the fifth inning headlined by Jace Cappellin's RBI double. Cappellin would come around to score after Randy Hubbard reached on an error.

Cole Bates hit a two run double in the sixth inning scoring Fairbanks and Caithaml to further the Terrier lead at 9-3.

Pitt-Greensburg put together a run in the seventh inning, but would fall by a score of 9-4.

Sam Boyle (1-0) picked up his first win of the 2021 campaign going four and two thirds innings giving up one earned run with two strikeouts. Boyle was relieved by Jacob Kocuba who pitched two and one third innings allowing one earned run.

Tony Iannuzzo (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats.

Caithaml went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Marrs added three hits of his own with a 3-for-4 game one with two runs scored. Workman, Adams and Bates each had two hits during game one.
 
GAME 2: The visiting team struck first in game number two as the Bobcats brought three runs across the plate.

Jace Cappellin hit an RBI single in the second inning giving Pitt. Greensburg the early lead at 1-0.

Randy Hubbard hit a solo home run in the fourth inning extending the lead to 2-0. Ben Green then reached on an error that scored Jordan Cavanaugh.

Bobcats pitcher Mikey Sullivan was able to keep the Hiram bats silent for the early innings before the Terriers got on the scoreboard. Chaisson Marrs hit an RBI single scoring Andrew Church.

The Bobcats extended their lead in sixth inning with two more runs being scored. Cavanaugh hit an RBI sacrifice fly and Chandler Goodwin added an RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Marrs hit an RBI single scoring Evan Fairbanks. Andrew Church then came around the score on a wild pitch making it 5-3. The Terriers were able to load the bases and send the game winning run to the plate, but fell short at 5-3.

Sullivan (1-2) nearly went the distance for Pitt. Greensburg picking up the win and pitching six and two third innings giving up three runs with four strikeouts.

John Lusnek (0-2) took the loss in his longest outing of the year going five and two thirds innings giving up two earned runs with three strikeouts. 

Marrs again had a multi-hit game for the home side, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Hiram (3-7) will be on the road for its next contest playing at Penn State Behrend on Thursday, March 25, in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
