PAINESVILLE, Ohio – March 21, 2021 – Hiram softball split a doubleheader on Sunday playing at Lake Erie College winning game one, 3-1, and losing game two, 5-4 in eight innings.
GAME 1: A pitcher's duel highlighted the first game of the afternoon as
Bailey Scheck and Grace Hammer each pitched complete games.
The two starter's kept both teams bats silent until the sixth inning when Hiram put up three runs.
Melissa Galindo hit an RBI double that scored
Hunter Whitton breaking the scoreless game up.
Giselle Bahena hit an RBI single scoring Galindo, followed by an RBI single off the bat of
Mariah Sheffield that scored Bahena. At the conclusion of the sixth inning, Hiram led 3-0.
Jaime Carpenter hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for the home side, but the comeback effort fell short with the Terriers taking game one 3-1.
Scheck (2-1) took the win for Hiram, pitching seven innings allowing one earned run with a strikeout.
Hammer (2-6) ended up with the loss for Lake Erie, pitching seven innings giving up three earned runs and striking out two.
Galindo had the lone multi-hit game for the Terriers, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Sheffield, Bahena and Whitton each contributed with a hit a piece.
GAME 2: Hiram once again had a big inning to start off the scoring in game two of the doubleheader. The Terriers put up four runs in the third inning breaking up the scoreless game.
Melissa Galindo hit an RBI single brining Abirana Schwartz across the plate for the first run.
Giselle Bahena brought Galindo home with an RBI single off her own stretching the lead to 2-0.
Mariah Sheffield went for extra bases hitting an RBI double that scored Bahena. The scoring was capped off by
Rebekah Lewan's RBI single scoring Sheffield making the score 4-0.
Lake Erie College chipped away in the next innings, highlighted by two RBI triples. Kiya Smith and Payton Brownlee each hit RBI triples in the fourth and fifth innings. Chloe Allen hit an RBI single shortening the Terrier lead to 4-3.
In the seventh inning Payton Brownlee hit a solo home run tying the contest at four runs. Jesse Carpenter's RBI sacrifice fly that scored Parker Viele would win it for the Storm in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Jeskari Rodriguez (1-2) took the loss in game two, pitching six innings allowing four runs and striking out five.
Bridget Mullholand (1-1) received the victory for Lake Erie College. Mullholand came into the ballgame as a reliever and pitched the final five and one third innings giving up no runs and getting four batters out via the strikeout.
Hiram (3-3) will be on the road again as they travel next to play Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio on Tuesday, March 23 with a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
