Softball Takes One Win In Home Doubleheader

HIRAM, Ohio – March 20, 2021 – Hiram softball split a doubleheader on Saturday at Myrtis E. Herndon Field winning game one, 3-1, and losing game two, 14-12.

GAME 1: Meaghan Stafford started the scoring for the Terriers in the second inning coming across the plate on a wild pitch to give the home side an early 1-0 lead.

Megan Hu then scored Brittany Pierce on an RBI groundout, evening the game at one a piece.

It was a battle of pitchers in the middle innings as Amanda Smith and Bailey Scheck kept both teams mostly quiet. Smith, who came in as a reliever, pitched the final four and two-thirds innings for the road team, allowing two earned runs and striking out nine.

Angel Santellan helped the Terriers take the go ahead run after reaching on a fielder's choice scoring Giselle Bahena making it 2-1. Rebekah Lewan added an insurance run for Hiram in the sixth inning after stealing home, to add onto the lead at 3-1.

Scheck went the distance for the Terriers pitching all seven innings while allowing six hits with one earned run and a strikeout. The senior earned her first victory of the year evening her record to 1-1.
Smith (0-1) took the loss for Carnegie Mellon.
 
GAME 2: Both teams started scoring out of the gate quickly in game number two. After Carnegie Mellon notched a run in the top half of the inning, Hiram stormed back with four of their own.

Rebekah Lewan and Giselle Bahena each hit RBI singles, followed by a Meaghan Stafford RBI groundout. After one inning, Hiram led 4-1.

The Tartans chipped into the scoring column in the second and third innings tying the game back up at four runs apiece.

Lewan continued the scoring knocking an RBI single scoring Jasmine Davidson to make it 5-4 for the home side.

CMU answered with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings thanks to Kiera Boucher and Scotty McGee each hitting RBI singles.

The fifth inning was another big inning for the Hiram bats as three runs came across the plate. Lewan, Stafford and Santellan each had RBI hits in the inning. Lewan's single scored Abriana Schwartz. Stafford's scored Avery Balurdi and Santellan brought both Lewan and Mariah Sheffield.

Hiram took a 9-6 lead into the sixth inning, but the Tartons fought back to tie the game by the inning's conclusion. Audrey Pederson hit a two-run triple, which was followed by Emily Finger scoring Pederson on an RBI single tying the game at nine and forcing extra innings.

CMU's five run eighth inning gave the Tartons the lead after the eighth inning gave the visiting team a 14-9 lead. Hiram would score three times in the bottom of the frame, but dropped the contest 14-12.

Amanda Smith (2-1) took the win with two innings pitched and three strikeouts.

Morgan Finley (0-1) took the loss after pitching one and one third innings.

Schwartz went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored. Lewan added on with a 3-for-4 game with two runs scored and three RBIs. Sheffield and Giselle Bahena each 2-for-4 games as well.  

Hiram softball will take the field again tomorrow, Sunday, March 21, playing at Lake Erie in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
