Baseball Drops Home Doubleheader Against Penn State Behrend

HIRAM, Ohio – March 20, 2021 – Hiram baseball dropped two games on Saturday at Fishel Field at Proverbs Park losing game one 11-1 and game two 6-5.

GAME 1: The Lions took the early lead in game number one and held on for the remainder of the contest. Penn State Behrend scored four runs in the second inning. Anthony Slate drove in two runs on an RBI double and Josh Wagner drove in two more with a fielder's choice.

In the third inning the Lions tacked on two more runs followed by a four run fifth inning making it 10-0. 

Penn State Behrend would go on to score one more run in the sixth inning to cap off their scoring with 11 runs.

Cody Wilson would drive in Devin Houdeshell in the last fame to give the Terriers a run on the board. The comeback effort would fall short however, giving the Lions an 11-1 victory.   

Robert James (1-1) took the loss for the Terriers.

Thomas Zbezinski (1-0) took the win for Penn State Behrend. 
 
GAME 2: Zack Bowen started the scoring for the Lions in the top of the first hitting an RBI triple that brought two across the plate for the road side.

David Paus was thrown out at second base, but Curtis Caithaml was able to reach home plate after running in from third on the throw down to second. This cut the Lions lead in half at 2-1.

Penn State Behrend was able to score two more in the second frame, with Braden Paulinellie hitting an RBI double and Juston Jones hitting an RBI groundout making it 4-1.

Cole Bates hit a home run, his first of the year, in the bottom of the second inning shortening the Lions lead to 4-2. Kyle Adams then tied the ballgame up at four in the same inning on a two-run double.

The two teams then traded blows near the end of the game. Donny Watters hit an RBI single scoring Zack Bowen giving the road team a one run advantage.

Cody Wilson then countered hitting a pinch hit RBI single bringing Daniel Wimsett across home plate.

Josh Wagner hit a solo home run in the seventh inning marking the sixth and final run for the Lions.

Hiram was able to put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short at the plate.

Stephen Javorek got the start for the Terriers and pitched six innings giving up four runs with three strikeouts.

Curtis Caithaml went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Kyle Adams hit a two run double and David Paus went 2-for-4 at the plate.

John Lusnek (0-1) took the loss for the Terriers.

Ryan Weaver (1-0) took home the win in the second contest.

Hiram next plays tomorrow, Saturday, March 21, in a doubleheader at Wittenberg beginning at 2 p.m.
