WOOSTER, Ohio - October 30, 2021 – Hiram College football fell to The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 51-14 on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.
Though the Terriers won the coin and elected to receive the opening kickoff, it was the Fighting Scots who got off to a hot start. After forcing a fumble inside Hiram's 10-yard line, Wooster quickly took a 7-0 lead on Andrew Yanssen's two-yard rushing touchdown.
And after Hiram went three-and-out on the ensuing drive, Wooster looked to extend their lead with a 13-play, 58-yard drive. Hiram's defense though, held on third-and-goal from the Terrier one-yard line and the Fighting Scots settled for a field goal to go up 10-0.
Another turnover and quick Fighting Scots touchdown made it 17-0 though, and The College of Wooster took advantage of three first-quarter turnovers to take a 24-0 lead after one.
The Fighting Scots quickly added to their lead in the second quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns on their first two drives to take a 38-0 lead.
Starting from their 22-yard line after a 62-yard punt by
Noah Murry, tied for the fifth-longest punt in program history, Wooster again looked to add to their lead. But
Terry Allison and
Alfred Pedro forced incompletions on third and fourth down from Hiram's 36-yard line, giving the back to the Terriers.
But after a three-and-out and blocked punt, Wooster this time added to their lead heading into the half, extending their lead on Yanssen's six-yard rushing touchdown, and the Terriers headed into halftime down 45-0.
Wooster extended their lead with a pair of third-quarter field goals, before
Jacob Simmons and the Terrier offense got rolling midway through the third and into the fourth.
After Wooster punted to start the fourth quarter, Simmons hit
Raequan Davis-Hereford for a 21-yard completion on second-and-seven, but a holding call started the drive, forcing Hiram to punt.
Hiram's defense though, quickly forced a three-and-out, and on the ensuing drive, Hiram finally got on the scoreboard.
Xavier Irving picked up 12 yards on second-and-10 to get the drive going, before a Wooster personal four moved Hiram into Fighting Scots' territory.
On third-and-two, Simmons found
Zion Paynther for eight yards to pick up a first down, and then
Nathaniel Vasquez for seven yards on first-and-goal before Irving found the end zone with a three-yard rushing touchdown, cutting Wooster's lead to 51-7.
And after another Fighting Scots three-and-out, Simmons moved the Terriers into Wooster territory with completions to
Anthony Sessi and
Trystan Mollohan, before finding Mollohan for a 23-yard touchdown to make it a 51-14 Wooster lead.
However, Wooster kneeled out the clock on the ensuing drive, finishing off the 51-14 victory.
Hiram falls to 1-7 (0-7 NCAC) with the loss, while the Fighting Scots move to 5-3 (4-3 NCAC) with the win.
Under center, Simmons completed 13-of-27 for 142 yards and a touchdown, while
Malcolm Rogers led Hiram on the ground with five rushes for 29 yards. Through the air, Mollohan and Davis-Hereford each caught four receptions, Mollohan's for 46 yards and a score, and Davis-Hereford's for 41 yards.
Defensively,
Dylan Baliker led Hiram with eight tackles, while eight different Terriers recorded a tackle for a loss.
Isaiah Davilla and
Malakai Nation forced Wooster's two fumbles, while
Joseph Haugh notched his first career sack.
Hiram now returns home for their Senior Day matchup against Denison University on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. at Charles A. Henry Field, before wrapping up the 2021 season on the road against Kenyon on Nov. 13.
