Hiram Football Drops Senior Day Matchup vs. Denison

HIRAM, Ohio - November 6, 2021Hiram College football fell to the Denison University Big Red, 59-6, on Saturday in their final home game of the 2021 season at Charles A. Henry Field at Malmisur Stadium.

Though Brock Mancini intercepted Drew Dawkins on the second play of the Big Red's opening drive, setting the offense up with first-and-10 from the Denison 10-yard line, Hiram's offense stalled and Chris Miller's 31-yard field goal attempt was blocked, keeping the game scoreless with 12:55 to play in the first.

From there, the Big Red scored twice on Trey Fabrocini's one-yard touchdown run and Mack Marston's 29-yard touchdown run to go up 14-0 after one.

Denison quickly extended their lead to start the second quarter on Andrew Blanchard's six-yard rushing touchdown, later adding three more second-quarter scores to take a 42-0 lead into the locker room.

Down 42-0, Hiram's offense looked to get on the scoreboard before the end of the half, opened the drive with a 24-yard completion from Jacob Simmons to Rene Jimenez, but the Terriers' drive stalled just outside field-goal range, and Hiram headed into the locker room down 42-0.

Hiram opened the third quarter with an eight-play, 41-yard drive, driving inside the Big Red 30-yard line, but a four-yard loss on second-and-nine stalled the Terriers' offense and a sack on fourth-and-10 forced a turnover on downs.

On the ensuing drive, Hiram's defense held Denison to just a field goal to extend the lead to 45-0, but an interception gave the ball right back to the Big Red, who took advantage with a seven-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 52-0, adding a pick-six on the next drive to take a 59-0 lead heading to the fourth.

Starting from the Denison 44-yard line, the Big Red looked to add to the lead to start the fourth, but the Terrier defense held on third-and-goal and Pat Kramer missed the 28-yard field goal, keeping Denison's lead at 59-0.

And on the ensuing drive, Hiram finally found paydirt, as Xavier Irving scampered down the sideline for a 70-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the Big Red's lead to 59-6 after a missing extra point.

Denison then held the ball the rest of the way, finishing off the victory with a 14-play, 65-yard drive that took the final 8:51 of regulation to cap off a 59-6 victory.

Hiram falls to 1-8 (0-8 NCAC) with the loss, while Denison moves to 6-3 (6-2 NCAC) with the win.

Offensively, Irving led the Terriers, rushing 69 yards and a touchdown on five attempts, while Gabriel Hoskins rushed for 37 yards on seven carries.

Defensively, Delanoe Harris turned in a 13-tackle senior day performance, while Dylan Baliker added 10 tackles and half a sack.

Mancini notched the lone turnover of the day for the Terriers with his first-quarter interception, while Sherman Cox notched a pass breakup on the same play.

Hiram will wrap up the 2021 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for an NCAC conference matchup against the Kenyon College Lords at 1 p.m.
