Hiram Women's Volleyball Drops NCAC Home Opener vs. Denison

HIRAM, Ohio – October 2, 2021 – Hiram women's volleyball fell in three sets in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match, 3-0, against Denison inside Price Gymnasium.

Denison took the early advantage in set one getting out to a 10-4 lead early after a service ace. Hiram collected six of the next seven points after a Kiara Franks kill made in 11-10. The Big Red slowly began to pull away in the middle portion of the first set seeing their lead get to 19-12 after a five-point run. The first set ended in a back-and-forth affair, but Denison would win 25-20.

The away team again started off the second set strong going up 9-3. The Terriers scored four of the next five points with Lyndsey Johns getting a service ace. Another mini-run by Hiram saw Franks, Madison Burns and Emily Richardson pick up kills shortening the Denison lead to 14-12. Denison again kicked it into gear going up 20-14. After a Johns kill, Hiram cut the lead to 21-17, but the Big Red won set two, 25-19.

In the third set Hiram got off to their first lead of the match going up 10-7 after multiple Denison errors. Down 12-10, the away team began their comeback. The Big Red scored six of the next seven points en route to a 17-14 lead. Andrya Hanmore and Miya Gotto looked to keep it close near the end of the third set with Hanmore getting a kill and Gotto a service ace. Denison still pulled away in the third and final set winning 25-19.

Kayla Cole led the team offensively with nine kills. Franks was right behind her with seven. In the assist category two Terriers reached the double digit mark with Emily Chrustic having 16 and Mary Landis picking up ten.

Mackenzie Brannon had a team high 18 digs with Cole also chipping in with 12.

With the loss, Hiram drops to 9-9 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The team next plays at home on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. against Thiel inside Price Gymnasium.
