HIRAM, Ohio - October 12, 2021 – Hiram College Athletics will dedicate Charles A. Henry Field at Malmisur Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 23 at halftime of Hiram football's matchup against Oberlin as part of Hiram College's Homecoming/Hollinger Hall of Fame Weekend festivities.
Named in honor of Charles A. Henry, a Class of 1920 alum and the first inductee into the William H. Hollinger Hall of Fame in 1964, Henry Field will be dedicated as Henry Field at Malmisur Stadium in honor of Joe Malmisur, the winningest coach in Hiram football history.
"We would like to thank Joe Malmisur and his entire family for their time and dedication to Hiram College and our football program," Interim Director of Athletics
Scott Pohlman said. "As a 2001 inductee into the Hollinger Hall of Fame, it is our honor to recognize Joe during our homecoming celebration this weekend."
Malmisur coached the Terriers to 51 wins over his 14 seasons at the helm of the football program from 1969-82, helping Hiram to a President's Athletic Conference (PAC) championship in his final season with the program in 1982, the first conference title in football program history.
"We look forward to welcoming the Malmisur family back to Hiram College to honor Coach for everything he did for the football program and the community during his tenure here," Head Football Coach Jack Mrozinski said. "I was not fortunate enough to meet him, but from conversations I have heard, he was not only a great coach but a better man. Our hope is to honor him with a football program he would have been proud of for years to come. We thank his family and all the donors that helped make our new scoreboard possible"
Following his 14 seasons with the Terriers, Malmisur was named Executive Director of Athletics at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, a position he held the post until his retirement in 1994. During that time, Malmisur helped the Penguins' athletic program reach new heights, with four NCAA Division I-AA national football championship appearances and the progression of the men's and women's basketball programs at the NCAA Division I level.
A 1947 graduate of Youngstown East High School and a 1951 graduate of Heidelberg College, Malmisur began his coaching career at Wellston and Lima High Schools before returning to his alma mater to guide the Heidelberg football program from 1962-68.
A past president of the Football Coaches Association of both the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and the PAC, Malmisur was involved as a coach or administrator in athletics for over 50 years, also serving as the District IV representative to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and on the NCAA Division I-AA Central Region's voting committee.
A charter member of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, Malmisur was named the 1990 Mahoning Valley Sportsman of the Year by the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association and was inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991.
Malmisur passed away in Oct. 2018 and is survived by his wife, Olga Schenk, his two children, Joseph and Martha, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
