Box Score 2 KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - March 7, 2020 – Hiram Terriers men's volleyball wrapped up their weekend at the Keuka College Invitational on Saturday at the JMW Center, topping the Keuka College Wolves, 3-2, in a five-set thriller, before falling to the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets, 3-1. With the win, the Terriers move to 9-9 on the season.
MATCH 1: Hiram 3, Keuka 2
After a back-and-forth start to the opening set, Hiram turned a 10-8 Wolves lead into a 16-11 advantage with an 8-1 run. Keuka was unable to break Andrew Gard's serve as the junior notched a trio of service aces during the run.
Up 16-11, the Wolves pulled within two, but two quick points from the Terriers forced Keuka to use their final timeout down 20-16. And after the Wolves cut Hiram's lead down to three out of the timeout, Hiram scored three straight to pull away and took the first set, 25-18.
Tied 2-2 in the second set, Hiram surged ahead with an 9-1 run, taking an 11-3 lead on Nathan Cassell's service ace to force Keuka to take a timeout. The Terriers led by as many as 10, before finishing off the set with a 7-2 run to take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-14 victory.
Keuka though, responded with a run of their own to open the third set, scoring four-straight and nine of 11 to take a 12-7 lead. Hiram regrouped following a timeout to cut the deficit down to two, 16-14, on a kill by Hunter Rock. But the Wolves would pull out the closely contested set, 26-24, to force a fourth set.
The Wolves again opened the fourth set with a run, and took a 15-6 lead on three-straight service aces by Emmett O'Brien. Hiram used a run of their own to pull within five, but the Wolves would pull away to take the set, 25-19, and force a decisive, fifth set.
Keuka led early on in the fifth set, before a service ace from Justin English pulled Hiram within one. Back-to-back blocks by Rock and Dangelo Boehner and Cassell and Boehner knotted the score at 8-all, before the Terriers scored four-straight, forcing the Wolves to use both of their timeouts.
Up 12-8, Hiram finished off the match with three-straight points, taking the fifth set on Jake Lininger's ace to secure the 3-2 victory.
Three Terriers tallied double-digit kills, led by Boehner, who scored a season-high 12 and a team-high five blocks. Rock and Phelan each tallied 10 kills, while Lininger notched a team-high 23 assists.
Defensively, Cory Fischer and Phelan each tallied a team-high nine digs.
MATCH 2: Randolph-Macon 3, Hiram 1
The Yellow Jackets took the first two sets, 25-20, to open a 2-0 lead on the Terriers. Hiram responded to take the third set, 25-20, but they were unable to force a fifth set, as Randolph-Macon finished off the victory with a 25-13 fourth-set win.
Rock led the Terriers with 10 kills, while Boehner, Cassell and Phelan each tallied eight. Lininger again led the Terriers with 23 assists, adding a team-high three service aces.
Defensively, Fischer led the Terriers with 13 digs, while Lininger added 10 for his first double-double of the year.
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, March 21 when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for an AMCC Quad-Match. Hiram will face Medaille at 12:00 p.m., followed by a matchup against D'Youville at 4:00 p.m.
