Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - February 8, 2020 – Hiram Terriers men's volleyball fell to the Wittenberg University Tigers, 3-0, on Saturday at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
Wittenberg raced out to an early 6-0 lead in the opening set, and quickly pulled ahead by double-digits, finishing off the first set with a 25-18 victory to take set one.
Hiram battled back in the second set, answering a six-point Wittenberg lead with a 5-1 run to pull within three, 12-9 on a block by Andrew Gard and Tom Supan. The Tigers answered with two quick points, to extend their lead back to five before Hiram went on an extended 7-3 run to force a Wittenberg timeout.
Down 17-16, Hiram rattled off four-straight out of the timeout to take their first lead of the set, 20-17, after back-to-back service aces by Supan. But Wittenberg answered with a 5-1 run of their own to take a 22-21 lead.
The Terriers and Tigers went back-and-forth and stood tied at 24-all before the Tigers rallied with two-straight points to take the set, 26-24, and a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, a 4-0 run gave the Terriers a 6-5 lead, but Wittenberg responded to take an 11-7 lead, and later pulled away with a 6-1 run, extending the lead to 18-11.
The Terriers would cut Wittenberg's lead to five, but the Tigers finished off the set with a 4-1 run to take the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
Hiram falls to 3-5 (0-2 AMCC) with the loss, while Wittenberg moves to 4-9 (1-0 AMCC) with the win.
Dangelo Boehner and Supan each led the Terriers with six kills, while Andrew Diaz and Jack Lininger each tallied nine assists.
Defensively, Grant Phelan and Cory Fischer led the Terriers with four digs apiece, while Gard and Diaz each tallied two block assists.
The Terriers are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they travel to Angola, Ind. for a tri-match against Indiana Tech and Trine University at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at Hershey Hall.
