Box Score HIRAM, Ohio - February 26, 2020 – Hiram Terriers men's volleyball fell to the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes, 3-1, on Wednesday at Price Gymnasium, snapping their four-game winning streak.
A 4-0 run gave the Golden Tornadoes a two-point, 7-5, lead early on in the opening set, but the Terriers responded with back-to-back kills by Dangelo Boehner following a bad set to take an 8-7 lead.
Geneva knotted the score at 8-8 and again at 9-all before two quick points from the Terriers gave Hiram an 11-9 lead, and the Golden Tornadoes took a timeout. Following the timeout, Hiram extended their lead to three on Jake Lininger's service ace, and later took a five-point lead on Tom Supan's ace.
The Terriers extended their lead to as many as six, 21-15, on a Geneva attack error, but the Golden Tornadoes responded with a 4-0 run to pull within two. Up 21-19, Nathan Cassell notched a kill to extend the Terriers' lead to three, and Hiram traded points with Geneva the rest of the way, taking the first set, 25-22, on a kill by Boehner.
Geneva though, responded, racing out to a 13-4 lead to open the second set, and forcing the Terriers to spend both of their timeouts. With the Golden Tornadoes up 24-10, Hiram twice held off set-point on a block by Boehner and Grant Phelan and an attack error, before Geneva took the second set, 25-12, to even the match at one set apiece.
After a back-and-forth start to the third set, Hiram and Geneva stood tied up at 10. The Golden Tornadoes scored three of the next four, but Hiram answered with back-to-back blocks to retie the set at 13-all.
Following a Geneva timeout though, the Golden Tornadoes spun off a 6-3 run to take a 19-16 lead and rattled off two more points following a Hiram timeout to extend their lead to 21-16.
The Terriers closed the gap to just four, 23-19, on a block by Boehner and Cassell, but the Golden Tornadoes scored the final two points of the set on a pair of kills, taking the third set, 25-19.
And in the fourth set, following a 5-0 Hiram run, Geneva rattled off six of the next seven to take a 10-6 lead and force the Terriers to take a timeout. Hiram would pull within one on a kill by Boehner, and again, later on, back-to-back attack errors by the Golden Tornadoes.
But up 19-17 following a timeout, Geneva scored three-straight to pull ahead by four, and answered Hiram's run with two points of their own before taking the set, 25-21, on a service error and picking up the 3-1 victory.
Cassell led the Terriers with eight kills, while Boehner and Supan each added seven. Lininger notched a team-high 16 assists, while Andrew Diaz also notched double-figures with 13.
Defensively, Cory Fischer and Phelan each tallied 10 digs, while Boehner totaled a team-high six blocks.
The Terriers will next head to Beaver Falls, Pa. for an AMCC Quad-Match hosted by the Golden Tornadoes on Saturday, Feb. 29. Hiram will face Penn St. Behrend at 12:00 p.m. and Thiel at 2:00 p.m.
