Box Score HIRAM, Ohio - February 22, 2020 – For the first time in program history, Hiram Terriers men's volleyball defeated Wittenberg, topping the Tigers in straight sets on Saturday at Price Gymnasium to win their fourth-straight match.
Following a back-and-forth start, the Tigers took a timeout after two attack errors gave the Terriers a 12-9 lead. Wittenberg cut the lead to two coming out of the timeout, but Hiram answered with a 5-1 run, taking advantage of three attack errors and adding two kills by Dangelo Boehner to take a 17-11 lead.
Hiram led by as many as six, before five-straight from the Tigers knotted the score at 23-all, forcing Hiram to take a timeout. The Terriers and Tigers then traded points, knotting the score at 24-24 and 25-all, before a kill by Andrew Gard and a block by Gard and Tom Supan finished off the set for the Terriers.
Up 1-0, Hiram took an early lead in the second set, pushing their lead out of five, 12-7, on a block by Gard and Grant Phelan. Wittenberg, though, called a timeout and responded with four-straight, pulling within one.
The Terriers, though, had an answer, scoring five-straight and seven of the next eight points to open up a 19-12 lead.
Wittenberg would come all the way back, pulling within one, 24-23, on a kill by Aiden Hauter, but the Terriers finished the set off on an attack error by the Tigers, taking the set, 25-23, to take a 2-0 lead.
And once again, the Terriers took the early lead in the third set, racing out to a 9-3 lead behind back-to-back-to-back kills from Supan and Phelan.
The Tigers used an 8-3 run to cut Hiram's lead to just a point, 12-11, and again at 14-13. But with a 7-2 run, the Terriers pulled away, taking a six-point, 21-15, lead on a block by Boehner and Phelan.
Wittenberg again made things close at the end, holding off match point three times before Andrew Diaz finished off the match with a kill from Grant Phelan to give the Terriers a 3-0 victory.
With the win, Hiram moves to 7-5 (2-2 AMCC), matching the program record of seven wins, while the Tigers drop to 5-11 (1-2 AMCC) on the year. The Terriers also set a program record with their fourth-straight win, the longest win streak in program history.
Supan notched a team-high 11 kills, adding seven digs, while Jake Lininger led the Terriers with 14 assists and Diaz added 13.
Defensively, Lininger also tallied a team-high nine digs, while Boehner notched a career-high eight blocks.
The Terriers wrap up their three-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 26 when they host the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes at 7:00 p.m. at Price Gymnasium.
