Hiram Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match vs. Elmira, Mount Union

HIRAM, Ohio - February 2, 2020 – Hiram Terriers men's volleyball split their Super Bowl Sunday tri-match against Elmira College and Mount Union, topping the Soaring Eagles, 3-1, before falling to the Raiders in four sets, 3-1. With the win, the Terriers move to 3-4 (0-1 AMCC) on the year.

MATCH 1: Hiram 3, Elmira 1
Following a back-and-forth start to the opening set, the Terriers and Soaring Eagles stood tied at 9-9. Elmira opened the first lead of the match with a 6-2 run, but Hiram answered with a run of their own, taking an 18-17 lead on a kill by Tom Supan.

From there, the two sides traded points, with ties at 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20. Hiram broke the 20-20 on a block by Andrew Gard and Supan, extending their lead to 22-20 on an attack error by Elmira. But the Soaring Eagles answered with two quick points of their own to knot the score again at 22-all.

Four points later, with the score knotted at 24-all, Elmira took a 25-24 lead on an attack error by the Terriers. But the Terriers held off set point with a kill from Grant Phelan and then rattled off two-straight on a block by Dangelo Boehner and Supan and Phelan's ace to take the first set, 27-25.

Elmira came out strong in the second set, racing out to a 10-5 lead. Hiram cut the Soaring Eagles lead down to four, taking advantage of a ball handling error, but Elmira answered with a 6-0 run to pull away and eventually took the second set, 25-15.

Hiram responded with a big run of their own to start the third set, taking a 9-2 lead on a run keyed by three points from Hunter Rock. The Terriers led by as many as eight in the second set before Elmira came back with a 7-2 run to pull within three, 23-20.

But Gard finished off the set with a kill from Andrew Diaz and a block, giving Hiram a 25-20 victory and a 2-1 sets lead.

The Soaring Eagles struck first in the fourth set, and looked to pull away up 13-10 following three-straight serves from Luke Milligan. But the Terriers kept things close, eventually tying the score at 17-17 and again at 18-all.

With Elmira up 22-19, Hiram rattled off two-straight to pull within one, before scoring three-in-a-row down 23-21 to take a 24-23 lead off Diaz' serve. The Soaring Eagles would tie things up at 24, but Hiram scored the last two points of the match on a bad set and a Boehner's kill to take the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-1.

Supan led an all-around effort for the Terriers with 10 kills and a team-high nine digs, while Boehner and Gard each added eight. Jake Lininger and Diaz both notched double-figure assists with 19 and 15 each, respectively, while Gard tallied a team-high four blocks.

MATCH 2: Mount Union 3, Hiram 1
The Terriers and Raiders traded serve for much of the opening set, with neither team able to build much of a lead until Mount Union rattled off four-straight to extend a three-point, 20-17 lead to 24-17.

Hiram held off set point once, but the Raiders then took set one on a kill by Andrew Cross, 25-18, to take a 1-0 lead.

Mount Union then raced out to an early lead in set two, using a 7-1 run to open up a 13-5 lead, before later extending their lead to 20-10 with a 6-1 run. Down 24-14, the Terriers again held off set point once, but the Raiders would go up two sets with the 25-15 set-two victory.

In the third set though, Hiram battled back, taking a 9-5 lead on a kill by Rock from Phelan. Mount Union would keep things close, as the Terriers never led by more than five, before four-straight from the Raiders tied the set at 16-all.

But the Terriers responded with a 6-1 run, taking a 22-17 lead on a kill by Supan. And down the stretch, Hiram matched Mount Union point-for-point before taking the third set, 25-20.

Looking to force a fifth set, the Terriers led the Raiders midway through the fourth. But with the score tied at 20-all, the Raiders rattled off three-straight points and five of the last six to finish off the match with a 25-21 victory.

Rock led the Terriers with 10 kills, while Boehner and Supan each added eight kills. Lininger led the Terriers with 19 assists, while defensively, Phelan led Hiram with nine digs. Rock also added a game-high four blocks, tallying a team-high 12.5 points.

The Terriers next travel to Springfield, Ohio for an AMCC conference matchup against the Wittenberg University Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1:00 p.m.
