Box Score HIRAM, Ohio - January 18, 2020 – Hiram men's volleyball continued their hot start to the 2020 season, sweeping the Saint Vincent College Bears, 3-0, on Saturday at Price Gymnasium to wrap up their tri-match with a pair of victories.
The Terriers got off two a quick start in the opening set, scoring four of the first five points and racing out to an 11-4 lead behind a 6-1 run. And Hiram wouldn't stop there, after two points from the Bears, the Terriers rattled off five-straight on Jake Lininger's serve, taking a 10-point, 16-6 lead.
Saint Vincent cut the Terriers' lead down to eight, but Dangelo Boehner notched two kills to stretch Hiram's lead back to double-digits, and Tom Supan finished the set off with a kill, giving the Terriers a 25-15 victory in set one.
Hiram again opened set two with a fury. After trading points, Hiram opened a 6-1 lead off a 5-0 run on Grant Phelan's serve. Two quick points from the Bears, followed by two quick points from Hiram made it an 8-3 lead before Saint Vincent made their way back.
The Bears closed the gap to just two, taking advantage of a pair of Terrier service errors. But Hunter Rock broke the Bears' 4-1 run with a kill, and Hiram outscored Saint Vincent, 7-3 over the next 10 serves to take a 19-12 lead.
Saint Vincent came back with a run of their own, cutting the deficit to just three and forcing Hiram to spend a timeout. But the Terriers regrouped and ended the second set with a kill from Nathan Cassell to take a 2-0 lead with the 25-20 victory.
Hiram once again opened the third set with a 5-1 run, highlight by a pair of kills from Cassell and Cole Filer's ace. Saint Vincent clawed their way back to within one, but the Terriers withstood the 6-3 run, answering with four-straight points, including two kills from Rock, to take a 12-7 lead.
From there, the Terriers and Bears went back-and-forth trading points until Hiram put together another run. Supan smashed two aces, and Rock two kills, to extend Hiram's lead to 21-13.
Saint Vincent pulled within five, but once again, the Terriers answered scoring four of the last five points of the set, taking advantage of three attack errors to seal the 25-17 third set victory, and 3-0 win.
Hiram moves to 2-0 with the win, while Saint Vincent drops to 0-2 with the loss.
Supan led the Terriers with 11 kills, while Cassell and Rock each added seven. Lininger tallied a game-high 16 assists and Andrew Diaz added 15, while Cory Fischer led Hiram defensively with nine digs.
Hiram will look to make it three-straight when they hit the road for the first time this season, heading to Altoona, Pa. to take on Penn State – Altoona in their first conference clash of the season on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:00 p.m.
