Men's Volleyball Falls Twice at Alvernia Tournament

Mar.9-READING, Pa.- The Hiram College men's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses in a tournament hosted by Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon.  
 
In the matchup against Marymount, the Terriers managed to snag a set, falling 3-1 overall.  
 
In the opening set, the Terriers jumped out to an early lead off an 8-2 run. In the scoring run, Hiram rattled off six straight points, including two service aces from Tom Supan.  
 
From there the Saints would keep the game close, eventually taking the 25-17 win. 
 
Set two mirrored the opening set with each side playing it close, the defining moment came when the Saints used a 4-0 run to take a 19-14 lead. Marymount would maintain the
advantage in the remaining minutes to close out the second set 25-22.  
 
Hiram took the third set in the game against the Saints claiming a 26-13 victory.  
 
The Terrier offense sprang into action in the third off back-to-back Hiram kills from Andrew Gard and Cory Fischer, and another service ace from Supan.  
 
Despite the Saints cutting the Hiram lead to two (8-6) the Terriers never trailed in the set. Maximizing off Marymount's errors and two Fischer kills Hiram would stretch their lead to 22-9.  
 
The Saints had back-to-back attack errors which helped Hiram finish off the set, while Gard provided the final kill of the set to extend Hiram's advantage.  
 
Following the third set victory, the Saints came storming back, taking set four, 25-18. 
 
Hunter Rock led Hiram with a team-high 10 kills with two digs, followed by Gard with nine kills and six from Fischer.  
 
Jake Lininger paced the Terriers in digs with 12 and 21 assists. Supan and Grant Phelan added 11 assists apiece. Supan also contributed five kills.  
 
The Terriers never fully recovered from game one falling in straight sets to No. 4 nationally ranked Stevens (25-20, 25-12, 25-12).   
 
In the game against the Ducks, Supan tallied seven kills with three digs. Dangelo Boehner finished with a .750 kill percentage. Colton DeForest and Gard each posted five kills.  
 
Hiram will return to the court on Saturday, March 16 as they host Penn St.-Altoona at 1:00 p.m.
