Football falls to DePauw (Ind.) in NCAC battle

HIRAM, Ohio -- Junior Joshua Philander (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers) had a 73-yard touchdown reception, but the Hiram College football team fell to DePauw (Ind.) by a 45-7 score on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers see their record fall to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in NCAC play, while the Tigers stay perfect at 3-0, 2-0.

Philander finished the game with 83 yards receving. His 73-yard reception was a season-best and one yard shy of his career-high of 74 yards, which was set against Kenyon last season.

Sophomore Alec Wells (Aurora, Ohio) completed 16 passes for for 169 yards and the touchdown strike. Senior Jaylen Dinard (Tampa, Fla./Paul R. Wharton) had four catches for 28 yards and senior Nate Eaton (South Euclid, Ohio/Walnut Ridhe) finished with 25 yards on four catches.

Senior D.D. Fleetion (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown East) had 13 tackles and a forced fumble. Senior Andrew Torres (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner), senior Jacob Dengg (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson Area) and junior Kyle Burchett (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Harding) each had eight tackles.

DePauw came out of the gates strong and scored touchdowns on its first two possessions, to take a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

But the Terriers responded on the first play of their next possession. Wells found Philander who was able to spin out of a tackle and rumble down the sideline for a 73-yard touchdown to cut DePauw's lead to 14-7 with 7:26 left in the opening frame.

The Tigers would add another field goal in the first quarter and added a touchdown with 1:44 left in the second quarter to take a 24-7 lead into the half.

DePauw put the game away in the third quarter, scoring on its first three possessions to build the 45-7 lead.

The Tigers outgained the Terriers 523-242 and also converted 16-of-23 third downs.

Matt Hunt led DePauw with 257 yard through the air and four touchdowns. He also added 85 yards on the ground.

Hiram will have a tough test next week, as they travel to take on No. 9 Wabash (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
