HIRAM, Ohio -- Junior Alison Cowell (Bridgeton, Mo./Duchanse) scored her second goal of the season, but the Hiram College women's soccer team fell at home to John Carroll by a 3-1 score on Monday evening.
The Terriers see their record drop to 2-4-0 on the season, while the Blue Streaks improve to 1-4-1.
Hiram had a chance to jump out to a early lead in the opening minutes, when junior Katelyn Mauch (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) sent a cross to junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep). Syrjala fired a shot from close range that was blocked by the John Carroll goalie to keep the game scoreless.
JCU would jump on top at the 13:21 mark when Lexie Keller converted a header over sophomore goalie Alina Mille (Medina, Ohio), who was drawn out on the play.
The Blue Streaks would expand their lead to 2-0 at the 40:44 mark, when Mollie Zoul scored her first first goal of the season.
But the Terriers came right back less than a minute later. Hiram was able to gain possession and Cowell dribbled on the right side of the field. She fired over the outstretched John Carroll goalie and into the net at the 41:12 mark.
John Carroll looked poised to expand its lead in the second half when Bailey Fischer broke free in the 62nd minute. Her first shot went wide of the goal, but she regained control of the ball. Senior goalkeeper Kailie Reed (Wadsworth, Ohio) was able to get back into position to stop a follow up attempt by Fischer.
The Blue Streaks would limit Hiram to just three shots in the second half and added a huge insurance goal with just over 11 minutes to go to walk away with the win.
Mille (1-1-0) made two saves in one half of action and Reed finished with seven in the second half.
The Blue Streaks finished with a 22-7 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Hiram will be in action next on Wednesday, when they hit the road to take on Heidelberg at 3:30 p.m.
