McKinney enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Hiram softball program in 2025, having joined the Terriers in October 2023. In his first year with the program alongside head coach Shannon Schaub, McKinney helped lead the Terriers to a 25-17 overall record, which included victories over the top-two seeds in the conference in the NCAC Tournament.
McKinney brings a wealth of experience – both as a player and coach – to the program. As a player with Team USA men’s softball, McKinney was a six-time national champion, four-time selection to the All-National Team and a one-time selection to the All-World team. He spent over 20 seasons with Team USA, including time as a pitching coach for the men’s junior team, a pitching coach for the women’s team at the Japan Cup and the head coach for the men’s junior team in 2017 and 2018.
McKinney’s other coaching experience includes time at Crestview High School, Morehead State University, Asbury University, West Virginia Tech University and Alderson Broaddus University.
