HIRAM, Ohio – September 22, 2026 — Hiram College women's volleyball battled throughout Tuesday night's match against Mount Union but came up short, falling 3-0 at Timken Gymnasium. The Purple Raiders took the three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23 in non-conference action.
The Terriers found themselves in a close battle early in the opening set. After trailing 12-9, Hiram responded with a 5-0 run to take a 14-12 lead. The Terriers continued to trade points with Mount Union as the set moved toward the finish. Megan Chiang provided several important kills late in the set, but Mount Union eventually regained control and took the first set, 25-22.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with neither team able to create much separation early on. Hiram stayed within reach of the Purple Raiders but could not make up the difference as Mount Union finished the set with a 25-21 victory. The win gave the Purple Raiders a 2-0 advantage heading into the third set.
Hiram came out looking to extend the match and held a 17-16 lead in the third. Mount Union quickly answered, putting together four straight points to move ahead 20-17. The Terriers did not let the deficit stop their effort. Chiang made an impact at the net on both offense and defense, recording a kill and then a block to bring Hiram even at 21-21. Mount Union scored the next few points, however, and finished off the set 25-23 to complete the sweep.
Chiang finished the night with a team-high 10 kills. Sofia Smotek also had a strong night offensively, adding nine kills for the Terriers. Courtney Johnson helped run the Hiram offense with 15 assists, while Mia Nelson contributed 13 assists.
With non-conference play now behind them, the Terriers will turn their focus toward conference competition. Hiram will travel to Allegheny College next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Gators.
