FORT MYERS, Florida – March 9, 2026 - The Hiram Terrier baseball team faced Haverford College for their third game in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Monday afternoon, with their sixth game in a young season coming down to the wire.
Luke Snider delivered the decisive blow in a 9-8 extra-inning win over Haverford, as Hiram answered every challenge that was thrown its way in a seesaw affair at the Terry Park Stadium Field. Hiram had five different players record multiple hits as part of a 14-hit day, with the final strike being an RBI single to right field to plate the game-winning run and secure the team's first victory of the campaign.
The game started quickly, with the pitching of the Terriers dominating and the offense following suit. The starting pitching of Braeden Kinnaird was outstanding, in which Kinnaird threw 6 innings with 5 strikeouts and only three hits given up (0 earned runs).
While Haverford struck first in the top of the third, the offense of the Terriers responded in the bottom half of the inning, when Andrew Fawver tripled to deep center field, scoring two runs and giving the Terriers the one-run lead. In the bottom half of the next inning, the Terriers would score again, when Ben Yoder hit a beautiful sacrifice bunt down the middle to score Lex Lear from third base.
But the offense exploded in the seventh to give the team some breathing room.
With the bases loaded, Fawver continued his clutch hitting, in where he hit a single to right field, scoring Luke Snider and Ben Yoder to open up the game. Stepping up next was a pinch-hitter in Brady Isgro, who hit a gap shot into right-center field for the huge double and 2-RBI play to give the Terriers the huge lead. Isgro would eventually score on a single by Ethan Ryan, which concluded the massive inning by Hiram to give it an 8-2 lead.Â
Haverford would respond in the eighth frame with six runs, which eventually led to extra innings with the game tied at 8-8.
In the top of the eigth, Cody Horvath came into the game and he continued his effort into extras, when he shut down any Haverford comeback attempt, throwing three strikeouts and only giving up one hit in 2.1 scoreless innings pitched. With Horvath shutting down Haverford in the top half of the inning, it opened up a chance for Hiram to win in the home half of the 10th.
Tyler Fernandez stepped up to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 10th and managed to hit a bloop single into right field to get on base. Fernandez would then advance to second on a wild pitch, moving into scoring position and giving Hiram a chance to win the game. Snider then stepped up and hit a beautiful ball over the first baseman's head and down the right-field line, which allowed Fernandez to score and give the Terriers the dramatic walk-off victory.Â
The Terriers will have a short turnaround after their exciting victory, when they will face Alfred State tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 9 a.m. at Terry Park in Fort Myers, FL.
