Terriers Fall In Hard-Fought Effort to Chatham

Hiram Falls In Opener 3-1

Pittsburgh, PA - October 30, 2026 - The Hiram men's hockey team opened up their second season Friday evening, when they traveled to Pittsburgh, PA for their opening match of the season against the Cougars of Chatham University. The Terriers fought hard against the Cougars, but would eventually fall short after a hard-fought effort with a score of 3-1.

The opening period was a defensive battle, with the Terrier defense remaining firm, lead by the play of their goalie Ian Amaranto, who would be a brick wall for the Terriers in the net. The score would remain knotted at the end of the first period, with Hiram and Chatham each with a scoreless tie.

In the second period, the Cougars would break the scoreless tie, which would give them a lead early into the second. But the Terriers would respond in the middle of the second period, when Luca Fernandez would notch his first goal of the season off of the assist by Cole Mitchell to tie the game right back at 1-1. This marks Fernandez's first goal as a Terrier, as it helped keep the Terriers close with the Cougars. The Cougars would end up responding late in the second, giving them the lead into the break.

In the third, the Terrier defense would remain strong, making the Cougars earn every face off and zone win. The Cougars would end up scoring early into the third, which extended their lead to 3-1, which would end up being the final score. The Terriers would compete very hard but would fall short against Chatham 3-1.

Leading the way in net for the Terriers was Ian Amaranto, who would finish with 61 total saves, including 28 saves in the second period, marking an outstanding start to the season for the sophomore. Scoring the lone goal for the Terriers was Luca Fernandez, who would be assisted by Cole Mitchell for Fernandez's first goal of the season.

The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, October 31st, when they will host Chatham, with the puck drop scheduled for 4:10 p.m.
