Walker Jr. Breaks Single-Season Hits Record, 17 Players Honored On Senior Day

Terriers Fall In Regular-Season Finale vs DePauw

MENTOR, Ohio – May 4, 2025 – Hiram finished its season with an 11-5 loss to DePauw in a rain-shortened day at Mentor High School, as the two teams only played one of two games to close out the 2025 campaign. Originally scheduled for Saturday at Fishel Field, the doubleheader was moved to Mentor High School's baseball, which has artificial turf, to accommodate for the rainy conditions.

Hal Walker Jr. hit a leadoff single in the first inning to set the program record for hits in a single season (64), passing Mike Dobran's total of 63 hits from the 1998 season. Walker Jr.'s 199 career hits remain a program record, while Chaisson Marrs finished his collegiate career with the second-most hits in program history (189).

It was also a memorable day for the seniors and graduate students, as the combined group of 17 student-athletes was honored before the game. Nine different pitchers appeared in the game for the Terriers, while all of the senior hitters were also in the starting lineup.

Joey Gubanc spearheaded the offense out of the No. 3 spot in the batting order, ripping three base hits – including a leadoff single in the fourth and two-run single in the fifth – in his first start of the campaign. Jacob Flesher and Kobe Hunter also had hits in the five-run performance for the team.

After Hiram erased a 3-0 deficit with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, DePauw's offense came alive and scored eight of the last nine runs in the game to take the victory.

Despite the loss and eventual Game 2 rainout, it was still a special day for a group of student-athletes who had combined for 10 program records and five single-season records between the 17 of them. Prior to the game, each of those players was escorted by their families and close friends to celebrate their careers in the blue and red.

Hiram will now turn its attention to the spring of 2026, when it will return to full-time PAC competition for the first time since 1989.
