WILMORE, Kentucky - April 12, 2025 - Hiram found its form at the plate in the second game of a doubleheader at Asbury University, as the team tallied 15 runs on 14 hits in a 15-4 victory to close out a three-game series against the Eagles on Saturday evening.
The Terriers lost Game 1, 4-3, despite a 10-hit effort and late comeback attempt. That production proved to be no fluke, as it turned into a major offensive outburst in the series finale, with Hiram ending the weekend on a high note ahead of an upcoming week that includes six games in six days.
Game 1 Recap
The Terriers nearly erased a four-run deficit to open the day, with the Eagles grabbing a 4-0 lead over the first six innings before Hiram scored all three runs between the two teams over the final three frames. The road team put the tying run on first base in the ninth inning, but stranded the runner in a game that had a drastic shift in momentum.
Jack Conley took the loss despite another gritty effort on the mound, posting a quality start with just three earned runs allowed over six innings. Then came the bullpen trio of Robert James, Owen Cooper and Landin Wescott, which combined for two scoreless innings to keep Hiram within distance.
The Terriers drew closer to the opposition in the seventh inning, when Chaisson Marrs ripped a two-out RBI single and Ethan Ryan scored on a double-steal attempt to cut the deficit in half, 4-2. One inning later, Matthew Trimble doubled and came around to score on an RBI single by Logan Gallentine, but Hiram couldn't do any further damage for the remainder of the contest.
Game 2 Recap
Game 2 was all in the hands of Hiram; the Terriers scored in all but three innings of the game, including a four-run fourth inning, five-run seventh inning and three-run ninth inning. The victory marked Hiram's fourth of the season by 10+ runs, all of which have come on the road or at a neutral location.
Behind the offense was the steady right-handed arm of Nicolas Chernitsky – the sophomore logged a final line of 6 IP, 4 H, 4 R/ER, 6 BB, 7 K to earn his fourth win of the campaign. The Elyria, OH native has already doubled his number of wins (four) from last season (two).
Marrs was the catalyst for the offense, tallying three hits, two RBI and two stolen bases to set the table for a talented middle of the order. Matthew Trimble delivered the big strike on a three-run homer in the fourth, while Evan Fairbanks was all over the basepaths with three singles, one walk and two runs scored.
Hiram also displayed a patient approach in the game, drawing a season-high 13 walks to create more traffic in just about every inning.
The Terriers bullpen remained strong and finished the day with five shutout innings after Cody Horvath, Cooper Smith and Timothy Johnson each tossed a scoreless inning to cap off a long day of baseball.
