GRANVILLE, Ohio - April 11, 2025 - Hiram's Darian Kanno is reaching levels that no other pitcher has ever reached in Terrier program history, entering play on Friday with a chance to improve her record to 11-0 and set the program record for career wins.
The senior from Mililani, HI was certainly up for the moment, surrendering just one unearned run over seven innings as part of a 6-1 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader against one of the best teams in the NCAC, Denison. The Terriers dropped Game 2, 2-0, but history had officially been made on a day that once again proved that Hiram can compete for another conference championship.
Kanno now has 45 career wins in the circle, passing Whitney Dropsey and earning the title as the winningest pitcher in Hiram history. With an 11-0 record this season, Kanno is also one of seven pitchers across Division III to have an 11-0 (or better) record in 2025. The wins record comes nearly a year after Kanno set the program's all-time strikeouts record toward the end of last spring.
Not only did Kanno shine in the circle, but she also stepped up to the plate in a big way by drilling a two-run double to carve out a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Three more runs later arrived in the fifth inning, when the Terriers sent nine hitters to the plate and scored on a fielder's choice, bases-loaded walk and an RBI single by Hannah Marlow.
The 6-0 lead put Kanno in a prime position to enter the record books yet again, as just one run came across to score over the final three innings to give her a final line of 7 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. Hiram ended the game on a 6-4-3 double play to seal the win against a team that also has aspirations to win the NCAC Tournament in May.
In Game 2, Denison held the upper hand thanks to a pair of runs in the fourth inning and only two hits allowed in the circle. Angel Santellan tossed a stellar game – with just those two runs allowed in her second outing of the year – but Sydney Silverstein won the pitcher's dual to make it a doubleheader split.
With a 5-1 record in conference play, Hiram trails only DePauw (2-0) for the best record in the conference. Those teams will square off on April 27 in Greencastle, IN.
In the meantime, the Terriers will set their sights on a pair of non-conference doubleheaders, beginning with Case Western Reserve on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. On Thursday, Thiel will come to Myrtis E. Herndon Field for a twin bill beginning at the same time.
