TIFFIN, Ohio - March 18, 2025 - Hiram's split its doubleheader against Heidelberg in the return to Ohio, winning 10-5 in Game 1 before dropping Game 2 by that same 10-5 score at Frann's Field.
Darian Kanno, who was named the National Pitcher of the Week, NCAC Player of the Week and NCAC Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, once again showcased her ability on both sides of the ball. The senior improved to 5-0 in the circle with 10 strikeouts over seven innings in the first game, while also batting 4-for-7 with two triples and three RBI throughout both games.
Daynna Mekaru and Haven Papineau also had big days at the plate to highlight the non-conference battles.
Although both games were designated as "home" games, Hiram made the trip to Tiffin, OH to play the games due to weather and field conditions.
Game 1 Recap
Kanno gave up her first earned runs of the season, but still posted a complete game and earned the win for the fifth straight time. The Student Princes got all five of their runs over the first three innings – two of which were unearned – before Kanno settled in and finished with a final line of 7 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 K.
Kanno has more career games with 10+ strikeouts (seven) than the rest of program history (five), with two of those outings coming in the early stages of the 2025 season.
Hiram helped Kanno improve to 5-0 thanks to a 10-run, 11-hit performance, with six of those runs coming in the fifth inning to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 10-5 lead. Hannah Marlow, Kanno and Mekaru – the 3-4-5 hitters in the batting order – each had a pair of RBI to account for the bulk of the production, while the 1-2 hitters in the lineup (Danielle Robles, Fayth Kawamura) each reached base three times to set the table for the rest of the team.
Kanno set down the final eight hitters she faced to seal the non-conference win.
Game 2 Recap
Heidelberg bounced back in Game 2, posting a crooked number on the scoreboard in four different innings. Ellie Tressler had four hits and Gabbie Stallbaum had five RBI to fuel the Student Princes.
The Terriers didn't go down easily, though, as they scored all five of their runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Kanno had another three hits and Papineau posted a career-high four hits, but Hiram left 11 players on base in a game that was closer than the final score would indicate.
What's Next
Hiram will play its first games at Myrtis E. Herndon Field on Wednesday, when it hosts Westminster for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
