TIFFIN, Ohio - September 5, 2024 - The Hiram defense did its job on Thursday evening, scoring the final touchdown of the first half on a fumble recovery and holding the opposition scoreless for the entirety of the second half in a 38-14 loss to Heidelberg at Hoernemann Stadium.
Freshman Carter Addison recovered the Heidelberg fumble to score the touchdown, while the senior tandem of Ricardo Jimenez and Damian Concklin each recorded an interception. Kole Tarary led the defensive unit with a team-high 10 tackles, which included a sack.
Heidelberg came out firing on all cylinders to start the game, scoring the first 38 points in a span of 21 minutes. The Berg had three rushing touchdowns, one pick-six and a 48-yard strike through the air to carve out the big advantage.
Then came the Terriers, who went on a 10-play, 58-yard scoring drive with freshman Miles Miller in the game at quarterback. The drive was highlighted by a 32-yard completion to Abdullah Gosha and capped off by a two-yard rushing touchdown from RJ Johnson.
The offensive spark also ignited the defense, which forced a fumble from Heidelberg's 16-yard line and took it through the goal line to piece together a quick 14-0 run heading into the intermission.
After combining for 52 points in the first half, Hiram and Heidelberg both were held scoreless in a different style of a second half. The Terriers defense picked up two interceptions, forced three turnovers on downs and finished the night with another fumble recovery (Keinen-Markell Newsone) throughout the opposition's final six drives of the game.
The offense combined for 83 rushing yards in the game, but Johnson and Addison were responsible for the road team's lone points.
Hiram will now set its sights on Mount St. Joseph; the two teams will play under the lights next Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. from Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
