Hiram Gets Opportunity Against OAC Competition, Splits DH vs Blue Streaks

Kanno Continues Dominant Form In DH Split With JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – May 1, 2024 – Hiram played a second straight extra-inning game as part of a doubleheader split with John Carroll on Wednesday afternoon at Bracken Field (4-1 win in eight innings | 9-8 loss).

The non-conference doubleheader provided the Terriers with a chance to take on some OAC competition, with a critical conference matchup still ahead this weekend.

Game 1

Darian Kanno, who recently became Hiram's all-time strikeouts leader, dominated yet again to begin the day, as she worked eight innings of one-run ball to give her team the best chance at a victory. The junior right-hander finished with 10 strikeouts and just four hits charged to her ledger; Kanno now has five career games with 10+ strikeouts, three of which have come this season.

The bats heated up as the game progressed, with Larissa Baeza singling in the fifth, advancing to second base on a bunt and stealing third base before scoring on a throwing error to level the score at 1-1.

Three innings later, Kanno did it herself with a two-run home run to score Abriana Schwartz, giving her two homers this season. Daynna Mekaru capped off the frame with an RBI groundout, which proved to be more than enough insurance for Kanno to shut it down in the circle.

Game 2

The Terriers jumped on the Blue Streaks for four runs in the first four-and-a-half innings, with Fayth Kawamura (two-run single) and Danielle Robles (RBI single) delivering the key knocks. Hiram won the head-to-head battle in the game in hits (14-13).

John Carroll showed its resilience in the non-conference affair, scoring nine runs over the final three innings. Kanno hit an RBI double before Kylie Perez and Megan Moser each found the barrel for a pair of RBI singles, but a four-run seventh inning from the home team proved to be the difference in the one-run loss.

What's Next

Hiram will battle the Fighting Scots of Wooster in a road doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. from Galpin Park in Wooster, Ohio.
